Giants Ahly and GS Petroliers set to meet in a thrilling women club championship semifinal

Antananarivo, Madagascar, April 9, 2013- four time African champions Kenya Prisons take on Algeria's Bejaia, while five time champions Ahly (Egypt) face heavy favourite and one time champions GS Petroliers in the semifinal of the 2013 Women's African Club Championship on Wednesday.

 

 Meanwhile FAP (Cameroon) play Pipeline (Kenya) and APR (Rwanda) meet Ndejje University (Uganda) in the play off for 5 to 8 positions at Palais des Sports Hall in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

 

 The winners of the tournament will qualify to the FIVB Women's Club World Championship next October.

 

 The second semifinal between Ahly and GSP is considered as an early final and look a classic derby between Egypt and Algeria. Ahly won the title 5 times and the last was at their homeland in 2009, while GSP won the title only once in 2000. The two teams had the best results in the competition till the quarterfinal as Ahly was the only team who didn't drop a set, while GSP took over the defending champions Prisons.

 

 The other semifinal will be a great fight between Prisons who represented Africa in the last three FIVB Club world Championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and Bejaia who are considered the dark horses of this competition.

 

 On the other hand the competition continued on Tuesday with the play off positions 9 to 16 where Stef Auto (Madagascar), Water Sport (Ethiopia) and VB Diamand (Madagascar) won their matches against Kutlwano (Botswana), AS Tanda (Cote d'Ivoire) and Les AS (Burundi) respectively.

 

 Now Les AS finished at the 15th position, while VB Diamand play Manga Sport for 13 and 14 positions, Kutlwano take on AS Tanda for 11 and 12 positions and Stef Auto clash Water Sport for 9 and 10 standings.

 

Play off 9-16 positions

 

Stef Auto (MAD) beat Kutlwano (Botswana) 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-23)

 

 Host Stef Auto (Madagascar) pulled off an exciting straight sets victory over Kutlwano (Botswana),  (25-16, 26-24, 25-23) in 70 minutes. The winners started the match with the full power to achieve a rapid victory and thus they deployed their block against Kutlwano attacks to win the first set easily 25-16. Kutlwano improved in the second and third sets and to lead several times but Stef Auto regularly won all the crucial points to clinch both sets tightly.

 Now Stef Auto plays Ethiopia's Water Sport for 9 and 10 positions, while Kutlwano meet AS Tanda for the 11 and 12.

 

Water Sport (ETH) beat AS Tanda (CIV) 3-1 (25-9, 25-14, 19-25, 25-17)

 

 Water Sport (Ethiopia) used the powerful tactical services to hammer AS Tanda (Cote d'Ivoire) 3-1 (25-9, 25-14, 19-25, 25-17) in 64 minutes. The Ethiopian team widely dominated the first and second sets due to disturbance happened in the Ivorian team defence to lead 2-0 before the Ivorian team played their best in the third set to regain the hope to win. Again Water sports regained their starting rhythm to win the fourth set and the match 3-1.

 Water Sport fight for the 9 and 10 positions against host Stef Auto, while AS Tanda battle it out for 11 and 12 positions against VBCD.

 

VBCD (MAD) beat Les AS (BUR) 3-1 (24-26. 25-9, 25-18, 25-11)

 

VB Diamand Club (Madagascar) took over Les AS (Burundi) 3-1 (24-26. 25-9, 25-18, 25-11) in 73 minutes. Les AS played their best in the first set where they saved three set points for VBCD to win the first set after great battle. Thereafter VBCD overwhelmed the match completely through their dominance at the net action to win three successive sets and the match 3-1.

 Les AS finished the competition at the 15th position, while VBCD qualified to play for the 13 and 14 positions against Manga Sport (Gabon) on Thursday.
