Senegal, Algeria and Egypt continued wins at the Africa Nations Champs in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya, August 19, 2011- Senegal, Egypt and Algeria won respective matches as Women’s CAVB Africa Cup of Nations entered its third day at African Nazarene University Hall on outskirts of Nairobi on Friday.


 Egypt defeated Nigeria 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-17) in a Pool A match to exert pressure on hosts Kenya who were in a rest day.


 Senegal achieved their second victory following 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-16) against Rwanda in a Pool ‘B’ match to bring their win-loss record to 2-1. Rwanda record further dropped to 0-2.


 Algeria went also on their second victory against Rwanda 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 26-24) in Pool B.


 Senegal used hard spikes and experience of Mame Ndiaye, Binetou Sow and Diallo Adama to rock weak defense of Rwandese players.


 Rwanda team was made up of mainly players of Groupe Scolarie Indangaburezi High School who won East Africa Secondary Schools Games in Nakuru last year.


 They include Regine Izabayo who is highly rated as one of the most promising players on the continent, Charlotte Nzayisenga, Ernestine Akimanizaya and Denyse Mutatsimpundu.


The tournament enters fourth day with crucial matches on programme today. Highlight of the day is the match pitting Kenya against Cameroon at 4pm. Kenya need to beat Cameroon to enhance chances of topping their pool which also has rivals Egypt. Cameroon will be out of contention if they lose against the hosts.


 The programme of the day starts with a match of the underdogs involving Botswana and Rwanda at 12pm.

Tunisia play neighbors Algeria in a Pool B encounter which is expected to be hotly contested.

 Senegal recovered to beat Botswana 3-0 (26-24, 25-10, 25-14) and bring their win-loss record to 1-1 after they lost to Algeria in Pool B on the opening day of the competition.


 Botswana who are new comers in African volleyball played well in the opening set but Senegal improved their blocks and attacks in the last two games to claim the match and record their first victory in the nine-team tournament.


The tournament is good training ground for teams that have qualified for All Africa Games to be played in Maputo, Mozambique next month.
