Nine teams to battle it out for top Honours

Nairobi, Kenya, August 16, 2011- The 2011 Women’s African Nations Championships that will be held in the Kenyan Capital of Nairobi, commonly dubbed the Green City in the Sun, has attracted nine teams including powerhouses Algeria, the defending champions; Egypt, the 2003 Champions; Tunisia, runners-up in the 2009 edition of the event; Cameroon, Nigeria and host country Kenya, the 2007 Champions. Others are regulars Botswana, Senegal and Rwanda.

 

 The drawing of lots was held during the technical meeting on Tuesday conducted by the CAVB Technical director Mrs. Howyda Mondy. Hosts Kenya were drawn Pool A what is described as the Pool of death along with Cameroon, Egypt and Nigeria, while Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Rwanda and Botswana occupy the other pool B.

 Ms Aarab Touria, the Competition’s Control Committee President, Mr Waithaka Kioni the Kenya Volleyball Federation President; Mr Lucbeau  Kalala, the Sports Organising Delegate and Miendo Salamba, the Referees delegate as well as several members of the Local Organising Committee and representatives of all the participating teams witnessed the draws.

 

 In his remarks, the Kenyan Volleyball President welcomed all the visiting teams and officials to Kenya. He urged all teams to embrace the spirit of fairness and sportsmanship

 

 Mr Aarab Touria commended Kenya for the good preparations up to the time of the technical meeting and the participating teams for the efforts they had made in preparing their teams. She also lauded Dr Amr Elwani, the CAVB president for his leadership that had seen impressive growth in African Volleyball especially that for women.

 

 The tournament starts Wednesday (August 17, 2011) and will see Senegal take on Algeria at 12pm EAT, Botswana play Tunisia 2pm while Nigeria test the strength of hosts Kenya in the last match of the day at 4pm.

All the three opening matches will be played at Nazarene University while Brookhouse School has been picked as venue for semis. Winners qualify for 2011 FIVB World Cup in Japan in November.
