Cairo, Egypt, April 28, 2011 – The Men’s African Club Championship has got underway successfully on Thursday with a lot of surprises and thrills occurring form the newcomers in the opening day of the competition.
CAVB President Dr. Amr Elwani opened the competition that shows the participation of 16 teams in presence of the Egyptian football legend Mahmoud El Khateeb who is also the vice president of Al Ahly club, the local Organizing Committee President Eng. Hesham Said, the Control Committee President Tubby Reddy, SOC Delegates Amada Sidiyane and Tesfay Asgedom, Refree Delegates Hassan Ahmed and Jaouad Berrada and CAVB Technical Director Howyda Mondy
The opening day showed the traditional forces like Al Ahly (Egypt), FAP (Cameroon) and Prisons of Kenya securing their first win while Sunshine Boys (Nigeria) and Rukinzo (Burundi) achieved surprises that was like the pepper of the first day.
Al Ahly (EGY) used the support of the home crowd to achieve a straight sets victory over Redskins (LES) (25-10, 25-14 25-10) in 61 minutes. In presence of 2500 spectators it was easy for Ahly players including 9 National team players to overcome their opponents in the shortest way.
National University team (RWA) rebounded form one set behind to win three successive sets in the way to outclass Al Nahda (SUD) 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-12) in an interesting face off. The Rwandan team was the better side specially in the net action and the quick attacks through the centers.
Prisons of Kenya started in a good style as they crashed Daim Hamad from Sudan 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-21) in 66 minutes aiming to repeat what their women counterparts who qualified to the World Championship early this match.
Port team of Douala (CMR) survived after the weak start to overpower Inter Club (CGO) 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-18) in a match showing good performance from the losers specially in their flexible attacking power.
Al Guish (EGY) showed a lot of consistency all through the match to easily overcome Setif (ALG) 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-23). The winner’s coach Fouad Abdel Salam fielded the most experienced players and succeeded to lead the match through the efficacy of their block.
Rukinzo (BUR) set the biggest opening day surprises when they flew past Al Saggana (SUD) 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23) in an exciting game. Rukinzo had a good start using the disturbance of Saggana defense even when they lost the weakest third set.
FAP (CMR) recovered from the sluggish start to defeat Blida (ALG) 3-1 (23-25, 32-30, 25-22, 29-27) in 111 minutes. Cameroon team arranged their combinations after losing the first set to win three successive sets that bring the important victory.
Ondo Sunshine Brothers team from Nigeria surprised their opponent GSU (KEN) in their first ever appearance at the African showpiece as they achieved a considerable victory 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 15-9) in 122 minutes.
