Gusenyi, Rwanda, May 27, 2012 – All Africa Games gold medallists Mauritius sealed their tickets to 2012 London Olympic Games following their tough victory over Kenya after a thrilling golden set in the final of CAVB Women’s Continental Cup final at Palm Beach in Gusenyi, Rwanda on Saturday.
In the Bronze medal match Mozambique took over South Africa to clinch the third place leaving the loser in the fourth position.
This is the second gold medal for Mauritius after they won All Africa Games beach gold in September 2011 and now they will represent the continent in the Olympic games. Kenya and Mozambique have another chance to qualify for the Olympic through the FIVB World Cup.
Mauritius and Kenya face-off in the final set a new proof of African Beach Volleyball progress.
Stepped out for Kenya was Indikila /Ndasaba and Rotich/Maiyo who have fiercely faced Mauritian outfit.
The two rivals played fantastic five matches clash with a Golden set settling the situation won by Mauritius 15-8 to crown them CAVB Representative in the Olympics.
The second match of Kenya Team 1 vs. Mauritius Team 1 was one of the longest in the history of African competitions lasting 55 minutes.
"In the first set our girls were playing our game but the Kenyan defence was very good, they were defending all the balls at the back of the court and this was a discouragement for Natasha in spiking , we lost at 21-14," Said Mauritius head of Delegation Reza Otoola
"In the 2nd second set, once we were ahead of the score at 7-4, they played naturally and they have put pressure on the Kenyans and clinched the second set 21-17. We were risking getting out the final at 12 -10 on tie break in favour of Kenya , but fortunately our girls came back strong, with spike and in defence to get the four points that we needed to stay alive.” He added.
The final lasted 176 minutes and concluded with a Golden set won by Mauritius to secure the Olympic berth.
Bronze Medal Match
Cumbi sisters led Mozambique to another chance of Olympic vacancy through World Cup after they hammered South Africa 3-2 in the bronze medal match with another golden set decider 15-11 over the South Africa Sekhonyana/Williams.
The ambitious determination started with the first match where South Africa Sekhonyana/Williams defeated opponents CHONGO/COSSA after 60 minutes match that ended in their favour at tie break 20-18.
"It was a difficult game because we faced the third ranked teams (South Africa), but we believed in our capabilities,” claimed Cumbi brothers. “We decided to give our maximum because we had no pressure."
Mozambique team1 managed to grab victory in their 2nd match against Luyt/Strydom 21-12, 21-12.
South Africa team 1 Sekhonyana/Williams maintained another advance after winning the third match against Mozambique team 1 CUMBI sisters in three sets (26-28, 21-17, 15-9) in 54 minutes.
With a strong come-back Mozambique grabbed their two consecutive wins on the 4th match and the golden set (21-12, 21, 12) and 15-11.
