Egypt claimed their 8th World Championship ticket in style

2014 FIVB World Championship- Day 5 African qualifier Men's Pool U

 Nairobi, Kenya, February 10, 2014- Kenya beat Botswana 3-2 (26-28 25-15 24-26 27-25 19-17) in the last match on the fifth day of the 2014 FIVB Men’s World Championships Qualifiers, Africa Pool “U” played at Safaricom Indoor Arena in Nairobi on Monday .

 

 Kenya clinched the second position of the five nation tournament which was settled early with Egypt clinching the 2014 World Championship ticket following their victory over Cape Verde 3-0 ( 25-14, 25-14, 25-16).  

 

 Egypt qualified for the fifth time in raw for the prestigious FIVB event and the eighth in total after 1974, 1978, 1986, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010.  

 

 Egypt finished at the first position with a win- loss ratio of 4-0 followed by Kenya 3-1. Botswana ended their campaign at the third position with 2-2 record, Cape Verde finished fourth (1-3) ahead of Zambia (0-4).  

 

Egypt achieved their first victory of the tournament after beating Kenya 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20) and went on to beat Zambia 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-15) before recording their third win of the tournament with 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-9) victory against Botswana.

 

 Egypt captain Saleh Youssef said: “The tournament was favourable on our side and we expected to qualify for the World Championships.”

 

 The remaining two African slots for the 2014 Men's World Championship would be filled after other two qualification tournaments to be held in Cameroon and Tunisia.

 

 Cameroon will organize the men’s Pool “T” on February 12-18, with the participation of Algeria, Nigeria, Rwanda and Gabon besides the hosts.

 

 Tunisia will host the Pool “V” in which they will battle it out against Seychelles, Congo Brazzaville, Senegal and Niger for a ticket to the worlds.

 

The women’s contest for the Italy’s 2014 World Championships start in Kenya as Nairobi welcomes Seychelles, Uganda, Tunisia, Senegal, Mozambique and Cape Verde in Pool “U” from February 16 to 23.

 

The conclusion of Kenya’s tournament would pave way for the next qualification round that would see Algeria host Botswana, Ghana, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Egypt in Pool “T” from February 23 to March 2.

 

Africa would be represented by two women’s teams in the World Championships to be held in Italy later this year.
