Rwanda and Kenya join Egypt to World Champs final qualification phase

2 December 2013

Kigali Rwanda November 30, 2013- After Egypt won gold Rwanda and Kenya claimed silver and bronze respectively at the final day of the Federation of International Volleyball World Championship Zone Five group Q qualifiers. Rwanda defeated Uganda (25-18, 25-23, 25-19), while Kenya saw off resistant Burundi 3-0(25-23, 31-29, 25-20)

Egypt finished on top of the 5 nation tournament with win- loss ratio of 4-0 as they already secured a final phase berth as one of the top three African teams in the FIVB Ranking. Rwanda won the silver medal with 3-1 ratio and Kenya came third with 2-2. Rwanda and Kenya will proceed to the final phase.

Rwanda v Uganda 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-19)

All eyes were on Ugandan-Born Lawrence Yakan Guma who was turning out for Rwanda and it was the second time he was playing against his native country. But qualification was on top of the Agenda for Rwanda and Yakan as they paced to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-19) victory.

Uganda also had a chance to qualify if they had got three points off Rwanda. Rwandan setter Herve Kagibura combined well with middle player Marechal Kwizera as captain Christophe Mukuzi shielded Yakan from receiving whose only duty was to attack.

Uganda had a lot of faults on their services, and net defense but also but overall Rwanda had an edge in terms of organization.

Kenya v Burundi 3-0 (25-23, 31-29, 25-20)

Kenyan Coach Gideon Chenje gave some of his unused players at the tournament playing time against Burundi and Kenya almost got a shock of their life. Burundi stretched Kenya all through. After winning the first set 25-23, Burundi almost snatched a set off Kenya.

When Kenya led 23-20, Burundi never gave up making four straight points to make it 24-23. Chenje was forced to introduce Philip Maiyo who he had rested.

At 29 all Kenyan skipper Ibrahim Odwor twisted his ankle and never played any other part in the game. But Kenya eventually came out on top 31-29 before still pushing for the third set 25-20.
