Nairobi, Kenya, September 16, 2013- The tallest player of the Women's African Nations Championship, Senegalese middle blocker Sokhna Gueye, is remarkable not only for her height, but also for her scoring contribution to Senegal impressive team in the competition.
Her height of 1.94 m pushed her to start volleyball career when she was 15y old in her school.
"I liked volleyball a lot since the first day I started to practice the sport," remembered Gueye after they defeated Algeria in their second match in straight sets at the Women's African Nations Championship in Kenya.
"I still remember when I was asked to join the volleyball team of my school after the teacher of physical education saw me at least 30 cm taller than my colleagues. I was training with high spirit to achieve my dreams of representing my country,"
After her performance with the school team, she joined Soccocim club where she succeeded to play for the first team while she was only 17 y. one year later she was selected to the Senegalese national team where her dream became a reality and started her professional career.
"I insisted to continue my study beside my sports career. I continued my university study as I liked the field of Human Rights, I want to continue to the master degree of this branch, but I will also continue with my beloved sports, Volleyball."
Sokhna Gueye came from a non sportive family as she is the only between three other brothers and sisters to be a professional player. Her parents also didn't practice any sport. "I need to achieve their dreams of being a famous player beside my own dream to play professionally in any European club. Here in Kenya, I dream to achieve the first ever podium place for my country in the history of our participation at the Continental event."
Senegal didn't reach the podium in their 4 previous participations as they finished 8th in 2003, 5th in 2007, 4th in 2009 and 2011.
Gueye scored 15 kill blocks in her overall tally of 25 points in three matches making over one of the best blocking performances in the whole competition.
