Nairobi, Kenya, September 12, 2013- Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) is poised to host another high profile continental championship when Africa Cup of Nations serves off at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Saturday.
KVF first vice chairman Charles Nyaberi confirmed that nine of the top volleyball-playing nations are expected to take part in this bi-annual event. Kenya won the last edition hosted simultaneously at Africa Nazarene University, Brook House School and Kasarani in 2011.
This event will rekindle the perennial rivalry between hosts and defending champions, Kenya, African London Olympics representatives Algeria and powerhouses Cameroon, Tunisia and Egypt. The other countries expected for the Nairobi thriller are Senegal, DRC, Ethiopia and Gabon.
Tunisia, who produced some of the finest women's national and club sides in the 90s are not taking any chances. They jetted in last Wednesday to afford themselves ample acclimatization time.
Cameroon, who spoilt the party for Kenya in the 2011 All Africa Games by beating them in the semis arrived Wednesday evening while RD Congo and Senegal were expected to jet in Thursday.
Nyaberi expressed KVF's sadness and disappointment at the last-minute withdrawal of next-door sister nation Uganda and Botswana who had earlier on given indications of taking part in the tournament.
In the meantime, Kenya has named a 12-strong squad to fly Kenya's flag at the championships. The National Head Coach David "Demosh" Lung'ahu named prisons and national captain Bracksides Agala to head the team. Others in the squad are: Diana Khisa, Jane Wacu, Everlyne Makuto, Elizabeth Nafula and Mercy Moim (all from Kenya Prisons), Janet Wanja, Violet Makuto, Esther Wangeci, Monica Biama, Ruth Chepng'etich (all from Kenya Pipeline) and gaudencia Makokha (Nairobi Water).
"The team is a perfect blend of experience and new youthly talent" said Nyaberi while exuding confidence that the Squad will, once again carry the day for Kenya.
The senior team has been training together with the National Under-23 outfit that is preparing for the World Under-23 Championships in Tijuana, Mexico.
