Uganda plots to reclaim Genocide glory as Rwanda organises the annual Tournament

Kigali, Rwanda, May 31, 2013- Rwanda will host the seventeenth edition of the annual Genocide Memorial Volleyball Tournament this weekend in the capital Kigali in presence of over 25 teams from the surrounding countries.  

 

 The competition which will be organized on Saturday and Sunday features teams coming from Kenya, Rwanda Burundi, France, Tunisia, Congo Brazzaville and Tanzania.

 

The two-day tournament which is sponsored by the Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG), will be held in remembrance of 46 (known) members of the volleyball fraternity.

 

They include players, coaches, and administrators as well as other Rwandans who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis.

 

Since 1995, Rwandan Volleyball Federation is one of the federations that has organized annual Genocide memorial tournaments in honor of the victims.

 

Rwanda Volleyball Federation chairman Gustave Nkurunziza confirmed the development to a local daily Times Sport.

 

 “We hope to host a good tournament. We have done our best in terms of preparations and we believe the tournament will go as planned,” said Nkurunziza.

 

The tournament will start on Saturday morning where all group matches will be played before the semifinals as well as final matches tomorrow.

 

APR is defending champion in the men’s category while Rwanda Revenue is defending champion of the previous event in the women’s category tournament.

 

The matches will be played at Kimisagara and Amahoro stadium. Other countries expected to send their teams; include Burundi, Congo Brazzaville and Tanzania.

 

 In the last decade and half Uganda has managed to claim glory at the Rwandan Tournament on four occasions, through KAVC and KCCA Women.

 

As the 17th edition commences on Saturday, the two sides together with Sport-S, Nemostars, Sky and Ndejje Elites will battle over 25 other men and women clubs from Kenya, Rwanda Burundi, France, Tunisia, Congo Brazzaville and Tanzania.

 

Men teams:

 Rwanda: APR, National University of Rwanda, Lycee de Nyanza, Inatek, National U19 team and Kigali Volleyball Club.

Uganda: KAVC, Sky Nemostars, Sport-S,

Tanzania: Jeshi

Kenya: GSU and Administration Police Kenya

Congo Brazzaville: Garde Présidentielles

 

Women teams:

Rwanda: APR, Rwanda Revenue Authority, Ruhango women Volleyball Club Lycee de Nyanza.

Uganda: KCCA, KAVC, Ndejje Elites

Burundi: Rukizo, Mozinga, Bujumbura Uwezo wa Ndani and Les As

Tanzania: Jeshi

Kenya: Kenya Pipeline and Nairobi Water.
