Antananarivo, Madagascar, April 11, 2013- A clash of two generations, twelve days of competition come to a head on Friday in Antananarivo, Madagascar as the Women’s African Club Championship 2013 final sees four-time defending champions Kenya Prisons, take on the young pretenders to the crown and one-time champions Algeria's GS Petroliers . A battle of skill and power and others more, takes place at Palais des Sport on Friday, 18:00 local time.
Both teams took on strong opponents on Wednesday in their corresponding semifinal matches. GS Petroliers beat Ahly (EGY) 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-18), while Prisons flew past MB Bejaia (ALG) 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-22).
Prisons won the title 4 times in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2011 and represented African at the prestigious FIVB Club World Championship in the last three editions. They have a lot of experienced players at the international level like the setter and team captain Jane Wacu who led the team in the four golden editions beside the giant center Bracksides Khadambi and the strong attacker Mercy Moim.
On the other hand GSP is coming with a young generation conducted by the experienced setter Fatma Okazi who s the main setter in the Algerian National team for more than 10 years. The team is lead by a group of youngsters like the attacker Zohra Ben Salim and Safia Boukhima. What made the team more competitive is the addition of two efficient Nigerian centers Teresa Okonmah and Ladi Jalmet who signed to the team this season. GSP won the title only once in 2000 and qualified to the final in 2008.
This will be the second final between Prisons and GSP after the first in 2008 when the Kenyan side won in straight sets to clinch their first ever trophy.
The eventual champions of the tournament will qualify to the FIVB Women's Club World Championship decided to be held in Switzerland next October.
