Kampala, Uganda, March 2,2013- National volleyball league champions Nemo Stars are undergoing an intensive training regime ahead of the 2013 African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Men’s Africa Club Championship in Libya from April 1-10.
The last time Uganda got close to being represented was in 2009 after 2008 league winners got to Cairo late for the competition.
Sport-S, KAVC, Nkumba have all won the league there after but failed to take part in the continental showpiece.
“In most cases these games are hosted by north African countries, which becomes a bit expensive for our team,” Godfrey Ssenyondo Uganda Volleyball Federation second vice president said.
For Nemo, who are eager to take part in their maiden CAVB competition, the competition will be a learning process for most of their players.
“Competing against better opposition has always been part of our plans,” Nemostars skipper George Aporu said.
“We are trying to train consistently because we all know that the mountain to climb is far bigger than last season,” he added.
Before the continental competition, Nemo’s form from last season will be put to test when they try to defend the Makerere Open championship stating this weekend, then the Ndejje Open. They will also travel to Jinja for the Jinja Open.
“All teams are coming out with new strategies, new teams so the main issue here is that we have to be at our A game no room for errors,” said the 2012 Uspa volleyball player of the year.
As the men will be heading north, league champions and national titleholders Ndejje University and KAVC will compete at the women’s version in Madagascar from April 5-17,
