Day 2
Maputo, Mozambique, September 12, 2011- The thrills at the All Africa Games Beach Volleyball Tournament continued as the half of the semifinal slots were determined following the second day of the competition held at Cost Do Sol Arena here at Maputo, Mozambique on Monday. The heavy favourites Angola and South Africa emerged to the semis in the men’s category, while Mauritius and South Africa made it in the women.
The rest of the semis berths will be set in the third day of the competition on Tuesday when Ghana line up against Kenya and Nigeria meet Algeria in the play off between the winner and loser brackets. Kenya field against Mozambique and Nigeria take on Algeria in the women tour.
The second day featured Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Algeria men teams as victorious in the loser side of the men competition, while South Africa and Angola continued their pathway in the winner side.
South Africa crushed Nigeria in a thrilling encounter as Freedom Chiya/ Grant Goldschmidt pair beat Kayode Ajilore / Goodluck Anyasodnke 2-0 (21-13, 21-8). Angola’s pairing of Sequerra Eden/ Sequerra Norcia continued their superior performance as the competition big contenders to overcome Ghana 2-0 (21-16, 21-12).
From the loser side Kenya’s Patrick Owino/ Evans Bera saw off Uganda 2-0 (21-19, 24-22) before they fought for three sets to beat also Cape Vert 2-1 (16-21, 21-13, 15-12) but after a great performance from the loser pair Valter Luz/ Davilson Martins who earlier outclassed Congo Brazzaville 2-0 (22-10, 21-14).
Algeria fought twice in tie breaks to reach the play off as Badr Eddine/ Rachid Benhallal rebounded to win Gambia 2-1 (21-18, 20-22, 15-9) before they played the match of the day against Mozambique pair Soarea Delcio/ Tovela Justavo in front of their ecited crowd to win also 2-1 (14-21, 21-19, 15-13). Earlier Mozambique beat Mauritius 2-0 (21-9, 21-12).
In the women gender Mauritius revenged against Mozambique after their pairing Natasha Rigobert/ Elosie Li Youklo won Satira Chowgo / Guilhermina Cossa 2-0 (21-16, 21-16). Both teams played at the final of Zone E of the CAVB Continental Cup where Mozambique won hardly 2-1 to win the gold medal.
South Africa’s Palesa Sekhenyana/ Randy Williams played their best to cruise past Algeria 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) after they used their spike service to disturb the Algerian pair Sonia Birkioune/ Meriem Boucheta.
Form the loser brackets the veteran Kenyans Margaret Indilara/ Dorcas Ndasaba Stunned Gabon 2-0 (21-4, 21-10) before they trounced Angola 2-0 (21-19, 21-12).
Nigeria’s Agera Preiolla/ Garba Mariam started the day with a victory over Congo Brazzaville 2-0 (21-17, 21-14) before they continued to the play off after beating Ghana in the most exciting of the women matches after a tiebreaker 2-1 (19-21, 21-12, 15-8). Earlier Ghana had a tough victory over Rwanda 2-0 (22-20, 21-14).
The competition will be resumed on Tuesday with 4 matches in each gender that determine qualifiers to the final that concludes on Wednesday with the medal winners.
