Maputo, Mozambique, September 11, 2011- All the heavy favourites in both genders succeeded to pass the first and second rounds of the Beach Volleyball Tournament at the 2011 All Africa games after they won their matches held at Costa do Sol Arena in Maputo, Mozambique as the first ever Beach competition got underway on Sunday.
South Africa was the only country to qualify to the third round in both men category and it was accompanied by the big contenders Angola, Nigeria and Ghana in the men tournament and the highly ranked Mauritius, the host Mozambique and Algeria in the women’s.
With all the 14 participating countries celebrating the first ever Beach Volleyball competition to be introduced in the All Africa Games Schedule, Angola pairing of Marta Penele/Kunsa Sora started the program through a 2-0 (21-17, 21-12) victory over the experienced Rwanda team.
Algeria started the men program when Badr Eddine/ Rachid Benhallal took on Uganda’s Tammle Richard and Kato Emmanuel 2-0 (21-16, 21-19).
The men competition showed also the host team Mozambique Soarea Delcio/ Tovela Justavo hammering Congo Brazzaville Ben Naxavoua/ Yvane Ngoteni 2-0 (21-16, 21-11) and then Ghana Ajamako/ Tagoe Evans surprised the audience with a considerable victory over Mauritius 2-0 (21-16, 21-9).
Angola men Sequerra Eden and Sequerra Norcia beat Gambia’s Secka Sanu/ Jamko Tijan 2-0 (21-15, 21-16) at the end of the Men’s first round.
The second round started with a thriller top seeded Nigeria victory for the pair of Ajilore Kayode/ Anyasodmke Goodluck over Algeria 2-0 (21-19, 21-17).
In the most exciting men match South Africa clinched a difficult 2-1 (21-12, 19-21, 15-9), while the spirited Ghana continued their winning rhythm when they beat Cape Vert in straight sets (21-15, 21-19). Finally Angola played their best to beat the zonal phase gold medalists 2-0 (21-7, 21-17).
In the women Gender South Africa’s Palesa Sekhenyana/ Randy Williams defeated Gabon 2-0 (21-12, 21-12) and big contenders Mauritius pairing of Natasha Rigobert/ Elosie Li Youklo took over Congo Brazzaville 2-0 (21-8, 21-13).
The second round featured a thrilling victory for Algeria over Ghana 2-1 (15-21, 21-19, 15-10), while South Africa clinched a tough victory over Nigeria 2-1 (19-21, 21-11, 15-10).
The hosts women team Mozambique Satira Chowgo and Guilhermina Cossa beat Angola hardly 2-1 (21-12, 17-21, 15-12) and finally Mauritius trounced Kenya 2-0 (21-16, 21-13)
