Tough clashes at the beginning of the Beach Volleyball schedule
Maputo, Mozambique, September 10, 2011- The drawing of lots for the first ever Beach Volleyball competition at the All Africa Games was held at Afrin Hotel in the Mozambique capital, Maputo ahead of the beginning of the competition on Sunday.
Costa do Sol Arena will host the first beach competition to be scheduled at All Africa Games in its tenth edition where 12 men and 11 women teams ready to compete as the competition gets underway with a country vs country double elimination format on Sunday.
Top ranked Nigeria men team, the winners of the last zonal competition in Ghana will be exempt in the first round to meet the winner from Uganda vs Algeria match in the quarterfinal in an early thrilling clash. Second ranked Kenya, the winners of the gold at zonal pool D will meet directly the winners from Gambia vs Angola in the second round.
Uganda take on Algeria and Mozambique combat Congo Brazzaville in the first round which feature also Mauritius line up against Ghana and Gambia face Angola.
In the women category the top ranked Nigeria’s pairing play directly in the second round against the winner from Gabon vs South Africa in another big face off during the opening day. Second ranked Kenyan pairing of Margaret Indakala / Dorcas Ndasaba meets the winner of the heavy favorite Mauritius pairing of Natasha Rigobert /Elodie Li against Congo Brazzaville. The first round will see also Gabon facing South Africa, Angola playing Rwanda and Mauritius meeting Congo Brazzaville.
The drawing of lots was attended by CAVB President Amr Elwani, CAVB vice president Habu Gumel and the control committee member Issiaka Sawadogo, Ayaovi Babanawo, Nasiwu Sadik , Gershon Roric, CAVB Beach Director May Alaa and the referee Delegates Gamal Bergheul and Ehab Tadros.
“We are happy to see beach volleyball finally in the program of All Africa Games which is actually like the Olympic Games of Africa,” Said CAVB President Dr Amr Elwani in his speech during the technical meeting attended by delegates from 14 countries. “I ask each delegation to do their best to represent our sport in the proper way to have the good image between the 24 sports of All Africa Games.”
Mozambique TV will broadcast the matches live from the venue beside 5 press agencies and more than 100 African newspapers covering the Games events.
