2010 Boys Youth African Nations Championship- Day 5 and final
Tunisia gold medalists for the second time, Egypt second and Morocco for bronze
Cape Town, South Africa, September 20, 2010- Egypt won the silver medals of the 2010 Boys Youth African Nations Championship held here at Western Cape Sports School in Cape Town, following their competition third victory over South Africa 3-0 (25-14; 25-19; 25-11) in the fifth and last day of the round robin competition. Tunisia secured the gold medals before the final day when they finished their matches with the clean sheet winning their four matches in a row. Morocco finished in the third position to gain the bronze medals after they cruised past their neighbors Algeria 3-0 (25-21; 25-23; 25-22).
Morocco v Algeria
For the Moroccans their final match against fellow North Africans was crucial as a win for them would secure a bronze medal position on the podium.
In a set marred by far too many service faults it was the Moroccans who grabbed a 16-12 lead at the 1st technical time out.
While Soufiane Faraji was devastating as a blocker, Driss Bouhali was quick to seize the opportunity to pile on the points. Not to be out done the Algerians soldiered on to keep their hopes alive of registering their first win in the competition. However, it was the more organised Moroccan outfit that went on to take the 1st two sets with a hard fought 25-21; 25-23 score line.
Despite looking jaded at times after their bruising 3-2 encounter against Tunisia, the eventual winners of the tournament, Morocco closed proceedings against the Algerians with a 25-22 margin.
South Africa v Egypt
A fiery start by the South Africans in their final round robin encounter against Egypt was soon extinguished by the latter as they slowly contained the powerful attacking combination of Miles Thompson and Dean Layters. Crucial blocking by Robin Wessels gave the South Africans some breathing space. When the Egyptians tightened their defense at the net through the lanky Mohamed Masoud and Mohamed Metawae it paid off immediately. The classy Egyptians stepped up a few gears and cruised to a 25-14 first set win that set the stage for their eventual victory.
In the 2nd set a fired up SA team narrowed the point’s difference to a slender 7-8 margin after having being down by 5-1 in a short space of time. SA’s middle blocker, Robin Wessels’ huge blocking action helped his team pick up valuable points. Valuable contributions from the SA skipper Layters and the quick hitting Thompson levelled matters at 12-12.
The fans were rubbing their hands with glee when attacker Carlo van Nelson’s powerful spike down the line felled Mohamed Hassan ,the Egyptian libero. Within seconds van Nelson connected with playmaker Marshallino Jullies ‘quick set to the antennae and unleashed a ‘bullet’ that struck Mohamed Masoud in the face. With the Egyptians being pinned onto the ropes one would have expected the high riding South Africans to stretch their lead and take the set away from the North Africans. However all the SA lads could manage was to take a 17-16 lead which was short lived. When the Egyptians shut the door firmly they ran out victors with a 25-19 score line.
Efforts to get back into the game proved to a daunting task for the SA lads who were out gunned by a determined Egyptian team who hammered them 25-11.
The victory secured the Pharaohs the silver medal.
