Nairobi, Kenya, November 27, 2012- Kenya Prisons men’s and women’s teams were crowned new champions after three days of competitive Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) play-off at Moi International Sports Center gymnasium in Nairobi, Kenya this weekend.
Prisons men beat former champions, General Service Unit (GSU) 3-2 in an epic five setter final match while their female counterparts dethroned Kenya Pipeline in straight sets to win the titles.
Prisons beat GSU 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 26-24, 25-20, 15-12) in the hotly contested tie stretched to the deciding fifth set after both teams won two of the first four sets.
Another interesting game was between the women’s Prisons team who dethroned former champions Pipeline 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) to reclaim the trophy.
The play-offs involved teams that finished in top four positions for each gender during the league stage of the competition.
The play-offs were played on round robin and Prisons teams won all their matches to emerge champions.
The victory has now given the champions automatic ticket to next year’s Africa Club Championship.
Kenya Commercial Bank beat Nairobi Water 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-10) in their last match to achieve win-loss record of 1-2 and claim bronze in women’s category.
Ulinzi finished third overall in men’s category after they beat Forest Rangers 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20) to achieve their first victory of the competition.
Prisons hard hitter Everline Makuto was voted Most Valuable Player while GSU’s David Kirwa claimed men’s trophy.
Makuto’s elder sister Asha was honored as runner-up in MVP award.
