20 November 2012
Entebbe, Uganda, November 20, 2012- It was exhilarating for the Ugandan crowd when Uganda affirmed its regional dominance in beach volleyball during the 7th edition of the club international beach volleyball championship November 18 and 18 at lido beach resort Entebbe lifting both the women and men’s titles, a repeat of last year’s show.
The men’s final was at first a tight rope but Uganda’s Otim Dickens paired with Okello Ambrose re-wrote history winning a third consecutive international championship after outwitting Burundi’s Mugabowingabo Briand & Dukudane Yvan 2-1 (19-21, 21-16, 15-11) cheered up by a heated crowd. The Burundi pair also Africa’s 2012 continental junior champions bagged the first set ably with their composed tactical play and were convincingly poised to lift the day before the Ugandan lads reawakened their act to push for the tie-breaker and eventually winning the 3rd set to add a second Gold on Uganda’s table following the ladies earlier win.
In the women’s category it was a pure Ugandan Sunday afternoon having eliminated the Kenyan and Burundian girls at the preliminaries thus setting up an all Ugandan final which Pajije Sharon and Aketch Vivvienne lifted after overcoming stubborn seniors Okecho Alice and Nuwagaba Sophy also with a 2-1 (14-21, 21-18, 15-13) win. The okechos were perched at the start to turn tables but the Pajije’s changed their game plan in set two before outlasting the Okechos in the tight last set. This and the Otim’s feat were to see Uganda retain the championship for the second consecutive year running.
The two day Rwenzori water & Nile Breweries sponsored event attracted teams from Burundi, Kenya and debutants Zanzibar as well as hosts Uganda. Timothy Kayondo Nile Breweries National Sales and Marketing Manager presided over the awards ceremony alongside Sadik Zaid Nasiwu the President Uganda Volleyball Federation.
