Nairobi, Kenya, May 11, 2012- Defending champions Kenya Prisons won their third straight match beating Varieties of Gabon in straight sets to set one leg in the quarter-finals of the Women’s African Clubs Championships in Nairobi on Saturday.
Kenya champions Pipeline were forced to work extra hard to beat NR Chlef of Algeria in a tight match and qualify for quarter-finals following the third day.
Water Sport of Ethiopia achieved their first victory in three matches following a hard-fought clear victory over Stella of Cote d Ivoire.
Kenya Pipeline registered a labored 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-18) to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Pipeline coach Japheth Munala once again started with experience fielding veterans Rhodah Lyali, Monicah Biama, Roselyn Odhiambo, Lucy Chege, Asha Makuto, Ruth Chepngetich and Mildred Odwako in starting line-up.
Chepngetich attack and Makuto net trick handed Pipeline 2-0 lead and opponent error increased the tally to 3-0.
Prisons beat Varieties of Gabon 3-0 (25-5, 25-7, 25-4,) in a Pool ‘B’ match that lasted 64 minutes at African Nazarene University.
This was Prisons third straight victory after they overcame Jeshi Stars of Tanzania (25-10, 25-18, 25-11) and Canon de Ndji of DR Congo (25-10, 25-18, 25-13) in previous matches.
Prisons win-loss record becomes 3-0 while Varieties drops to 0-2 in the competition.
In Pool ‘C’ Water Sports of Ethiopia revived their hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals after they achieved their first victory of the tournament following 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-20,) victory over Stella of Cote d Ivoire at Moi International Sports Center. Water’s win-loss record stands at 1-2 while Stella dropped to 0-3.
Entertaining Rwanda Revenue Authority achieved their second straight victory after they beat Stef Auto of Madagascar 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) in the other Pool ‘C’ match.
Revenue now joins Kenya Commercial Bank, who have also won two matches, as quarter-finals favorites from the pool.
Blue Eagles of Nigeria beat Mafolofolo of Botswana 3-2 (29-31, 20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-12) in a five-set thriller to register their second victory of the tournament at Nazarene University.
