Entebbe, Uganda, May 7, 2012- Four pairs of Kenyan teams have qualified for CAVB African Junior and Youth Beach Volleyball Championships following the recent Zone Five Qualifiers in Liddo Beach in Entebbe, Uganda.
Kenyan fielded teams in both junior and youth events for both genders in the competitions and they all made it through to the African Championships proper to be held at a yet to be decided venue in June.
Jacinta Mueni and Joy Njeri both of Kwanthanze High represented Kenya in women’s category of the Youth Championships and they beat Uganda 2-1 (21-19, 18-21, 15-12) to claim a ticket to the African Championships.
Uganda stopped Kenya in the men’s contest after David Walukaya and Maxwell Ekunoit both of Mukumu High went down 21-17, 19-21, 15-13 against the hosts in the event that ended last Friday.
Both teams, however, qualified for the African Championships since four continental tickets were up for grabs in Entebbe.
Naomi Too and Eunice Tarus from National Youth Talent Academy won Kenya juniors’ ticket after they beat Uganda in straight sets (22-20, 21-17) to emerge victorious in the category.
Sila Kipruto (Cheptil High) and Nicholas Lagat (Forest Rangers) lost 1-2 (26-28, 21-19, 12-15) against Uganda in a pulsating match of the juniors’ contest but advanced to the next stage.
Ben Juma who sits in Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) and Confederation of African Volleyball beach commissions said six tickets are at stake at the main event.
He predicted that Kenya stands good chances of qualifying for FIVB Youth and Junior Championships since their main opponents like Egypt skipped zonal qualifiers.
He said: “Kenya is likely to claim a ticket for the World Championships in one of the categories.”
