29 April 2012

Tunisia, April 29, 2012 – Zamalek captured their fifth Men’s African Club Championship title after defeating their rivals Etoile du Sahl 3-1 at Sousse Olympic Hall in Tunisia on Sunday to book a place in the FIVB Men’s Club World Championships in Qatar from October 13 to 19. Zamalek was the Africa representative in 2009 while Etoile du Sahle were looking to participate for the first time
This is the fifth title for Zamalek after 1984, 1987, 2008 and 2009 and the third in five years which make a total of 15 titles for the Egyptian compatriots Ahly and Zamalek to overwhelm the Tunisian clubs who achieved 14 crowns.
The closure ceremony was attended by CAVB Vice President Munir Ben Slimane, Local Organizing Committee President Aissa Lanouar, Control Committee President Issiaka Sawadogo, Referee Delegates Hassan Ahmed and Djouad Barada, SOC Delegates Morakinyo Ebenezer and Lahssane Boukhtewa and Medal Delegate Dr Mamadou Ndoye.

Final
Zamalek (EGY) x Etoile du Sahel (TUN) 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-18, 31-29)
Egypt’s Zamalek outclassed Host club Etoile du Sahel (TUN) aided with 5.000 spectators 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-18, 31-29) in 106 minutes to capture the gold medals.
The match started very competitive as it went point by point till Etoile was ahead 8-7 at the first TTO with a spike from Marouen Garci. Zamalek dominated the court due to their solid block against the attacks of Etoile from all the net positions to lead 16-10 at the second TTO. Zamalek led the net action completely afterwards through the spikes of Mohamed Abdel Moneim to win the set 25-17.
The second set showed a completely different performance from both teams as Etoile team arranged their block to stop completely the attacks from the net wings. On the other hand they started to use the spike service to disturb Zamalek’s reception to have a wide lead 8-2 at the first TTO. The experienced Chaker Ghezal used his long experience in blocking to continue leading 16-10 at the second TTO before winning the set widely 25-16.
The third set was the most competitive as it started with a little dominance from the Tunisian team who continued the same rhythm before Zamalek started to use efficient spikes from the centers and wing spikers to win the set 25-18.
The fourth set was the most exciting as Zamalek lost 4 match points before winning the set 31-29 to win the match 3-1 and the crown for the fifth time
Bronze Medal Match
Ahly (EGY)  Borj Bou Arririj (ALG) 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22)
Bourj Bou Arririj of Algeria completed the podium after they clinched a valuable victory over defending champions Ahly in straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) in 67 minutes. The disappointed Ahly players were completely out of form after they lost the semifinal for the first time since 2007 so they were beaten easily by the Algerian team that came to the podium for the first time in the history of the competition.
The Algerian team started the match aggressively in the first set using the spikes of the opposite Toufik Mahdjoubi and the combinations led by the setter Khalid Kessai to lead from the start of the match. Ahly tied to come back through the spikes of Mohamed Moustafa and the quick attacks through the centers but Bou Arririj players were on their optimum performance to win the set 25-22.
The second set started with the same rhythm as the Algerians controlled the net to lead widely 16-10 at the second TTO. Ahly came back after the maintained their block against the strong spikes of their opponent to come near but Bou Arririj won the critical points at the end of the set to win 25-23.
The third set showed improvement for Ahly club through using their spike service but the Algerian team was more motivated to win the match through their fighting in defense and attacks to win set and the match in straight sets
