Nairobi, Kenya, March 2, 2012- African women's volleyball champions Kenya Prisons and national kings General Service Unit (GSU) won their opening matches as Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National league threw off in Kericho on Friday.
Champions General Service Unit (GSU) saw off Finlay Flowers in straight sets of 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-11) in their opening match of the national league at Kericho Day High School.
The win gave the paramilitary outfit the motivation they need in campaign to retain the title they snatched from rivals Kenya Prisons last year.
Last year's men's league runners-up Kenya Prisons showed little respect to their brothers Prisons Mombasa after they dismissed them 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-21) in the other match that went as per the billing.
Prisons who are out to regain the title they lost to GSU last year paraded a strong team including national team players Dennis Mokua, Michael Chemos, Ibrahim Oduor and Blasion Kokonya during the match.
Prisons Mombasa who are regular participants in the league showed some spirit in the last two sets but Kenya Prisons powered back with powerful spikes of Mokua, Chemos and Oduor to see them off and hand the former former champions maximum points.
Blue Triangle coached by former national team tactician Sammy Kirongo beat Oserian 3-0 (25-13, 27-25, 25-15) in the other match of the men's league.
African women's volleyball champions Kenya Prisons were taken to task before winning 3-1 (25-18 25-22 18-25, 25-18) against a determined Kenya Commercial Bank outfit in an entertaining division one match.
The injury plagued Prisons played without key players among them inspirational attacker Bracksides Agala, setters Jane Wacu and Florence Bosire and Esther Mwombe who are all on injury list.
Blue Triangle women started the national women's division one league on a high dismissing City Council of Nairobi 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-21) in a match that lasted 58 minutes.
League matches were expected to end Friday evening and pave way for Mutai Enterprises tournament to be played on Saturday and Sunday
