Lome, Togo, November 1, 2011- South Africa’s men’s and women’s teams finished the second round of the CAVB Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Zonal Phase in Lome, Togo victorious following their win against Egypt and Kenya respectively to be closer to qualification for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Egypt men and Kenya women will join the gold medalists South Africa to the finals of the CAVB Continental Cup to be held in June 2012.
The South African men’s team saw off Egypt in the final in 4 straight matches after thrilling performance specially in the fourth match where the South Africa’s pairing of Williams / Fredricks fought hard to win against Egypt’s Mitwally and Aboulela 2-1 (21-13, 19:21, 15-6).
Togo men downed RD Congo team 3-1 to win the bronze medal.
South African women’s team had to fight harder than their men counterparts to trounce the struggling Kenyan team 3-2 after they played the golden set. Kenya started the match in a better performance that allowed them to hammer their opponent 2-0 (21-19, 21-16). South Africa rebounded quickly to win two successive matches allowing them to lead 2-1. Again Kenya played their best to win the fourth match and draw 2-2. The golden set showed again South African dominance through their double Sekhonyana/ William who defeated the Kenyan Rotich / Ndasaba 15-7.
Togo women finished the same ranking like the men as they won the bronze medal, taking over Gabon 3-2 after an exciting golden set.
