Day 3
Three Kenyan teams and 2 from Cameroon qualified to the quarterfinal

Nairobi, Kenya, April 1, 2009- The three Kenyan teams the organizers Pipelines, the defending champions Prisons and KC Bank as well as 2 Cameroon teams Bafia and Injis with Bejaia of Algeria, Al Ahly of Egypt and APR of Rwanda secured the 8 quarterfinal slots of the 2009 Women’s African clubs Championship following their victories in the the third and final day of the preliminary round here at Moi International Sports Complex of Kasarani in Nairobi, Kenya on Wednesday. The other 8 teams Water Sports and Prisons of Ethiopia, Canon Ndjili, VC Club of RD Congo, Kutlwano of Botswana, Kampala of Uganda, Jadida of Morocco and Les AS of Burundi will play for the 9 to 16 positions.

The final day of the preliminary round showed the third victory for Pipelines, Prisons, KCB of Kenya and Al Ahly of Egypt to lead the four pools, while the other four teams Injis and Bafia of Cameroon, Bejaia of Algeria and APR of Rwanda set the second victory that qualified them to the quarterfinal.

The quarterfinal matches will be held on Friday which feature 4 matches for 1-8 positions and other 4 for the 9-16 positions

Pool A

Pipelines of Kenya completed their clean sheet in the preliminary round as they set the third victory in a row over CV Club of RD Congo 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-15) to lead the pool. Pipelines head coach fielded all the outstanding players to finish the match as early as possible as his big guns Esther Jepkosgei, Asha Makuto and Lucy Chege sent their unstoppable hits that couldn’t be adapted by the VC defense.

Pipelines improved their win- loss ratio to 3-0 and qualified to the quarterfinal as the leader of the pool while VC finished fourth with 0-3 record to play for the 9 to 16 positions.

Bejaia of Algeria had to fight for two hours and half to beat the solid Water Sports team of Ethiopia 3-2 (25-23, 25-27, 25-19, 16-25, 18-16). Bejaia used the skillful combinations of the setter Yamina Azem and the impermeable block of the promising Aicha Meznate and Lilia Boulouza to clinch the first set but the Ethiopian team emerged through the Tamrat Kidisi and Addis Yoddi to draw and stayed ahead till the tiebreak when they lost three match points before losing 18-16. Although they lost once more Water Sport proof the great advance of the Ethiopian volleyball after their regular participation in the African competitions. They played a great match and were disciplined in defense and attacks through their modern volleyball.

Bejia finished pool A matches in the second position with 2-1 record ahead of water Sports that finished third with 1-2 record to play for the 9-16 positions.

Pool B

Prisons achieved an easy victory over Les AS of Burundi 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-17). Although the Kenya coach kept some of his standing stars on the bench but he controlled the match completely to win by a wide score.

Prisons led the pool with three victories to qualify to the quarterfinal leaving Les AS at the bottom of the pool with 0-3 record.

Bafia Evolution of Cameroon clinched the quarterfinal qualification ticket following their victory over Kutlwano of Botswana 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 26-24). Bafia used as usual their strong spikers and the solid block they deployed. As it was a match of qualification to the quarterfinal Botswana team emerged in the third set trying to save the match and they missed the third set point to lose the match after an exciting

Bafia caught the second quarterfinal ticket of pool B with a win loss ratio of 2-1, while Kutlwano ended third with 1-2 ratio to play for 9 to 16 positions.

Pool C

Injis of Cameroon secured a semifinal spot following their difficult victory over the motivated Kampala Team of Uganda 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 15-6). Kampala lost the chance of winning 3-1 when they were ahead 2-1 and leading in the fourth set but Injis came on time to fully dominate the tiebreak to win widely 15-6.

Injis end pool C matches in the second position with 5 points from a win- loss ratio of 2-1 to qualify to the quarterfinal, while Kampala dropped to 1-2 to finish third in the pool.

KC Bank of Kenya needed more concentration to pull off a straight sets victory over the struggling Olympic Jadida of Morocco 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16). Both middle blockers Margaret Tsinyeni and Jackline Barasa with the attackers Abigael Misol and Dorice Muyekho played a great role in the victory. The Moroccan team played their best match in the competition till now specially Siham Atoul and Mahassine Siyad.

KCB led pool C with 6 points from 3-0 record, while Jadida came at the bottom of the pool with 3 points from 0-3 record.

Pool D

Al Ahly of Egypt didn’t find it easy to jump over Federal prisons of Ethiopia as the promising Ethiopian players were up to the match specially Fanu Kebede and Genet Petros. Al Ahly won the match 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-16) due to their combinations led by the 2 setter Miral Raouf and Iman Tharwat with the setter Sherihan Sameh and Ingy El Shamy.

Al Ahly finished the first round at the top of pool D with 6 points from 3 victories to qualify to the quarterfinal, while Prisons finished third with 0-2 record pending for their postponed match tomorrow against Canon Ndjili of RD Congo.

APR of Rwanda clinched the second ticket of the pool to the quarterfinal after their difficult victory over Canon Ndjili of RD Congo 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-18, 25-17) after exciting performance from both teams specially in the first set which was the first to be won by Canon.

The victory improved the Rwandan team record to 2-1 to finish the preliminary round at the second position. Canon dropped to 0-2 and they will play their postponed match on Thursday against Federal Prisons of Ethiopia.
