Day 2
The big favorites achieve second victory
Nairobi,
Kenya, March 31, 2009- the big favorites Pipelines,
Kenya Prisons and KC Bank of Kenya and Al Ahly of Egypt
achieved their second victory in a row to secure a
semifinal slot after the second day of the 2009 Women’s
African clubs Championship here at Moi International
Sports Complex of Kasarani in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday.
The second day showed also the first victory for Kampala
VC of Uganda, Water Sports of Ethiopia and Kutlwano of
Botswana.
The problem of the frequent electricity interruption was
repeated many times in the indoor hall forcing the
referees to stop the matches many times.
In an unrecorded occasion Al Ahly of Egypt accepted to
play two matches in the same day as they played Canon
Ndjili in the morning in their postponed match from the
first day and then played the second against APR of
Rwanda near midnight.
The second match of Pool D between Federal prisons of
Ethiopia and Canon Ndjili of Cameroon was postponed to
the rest day on Thursday.
Pool A
The organizers Kenya pipelines downed the favorites
Naceria Bejaia of Algeria 3-1 (25-16, 25-15, 17-25,
25-22) after a thriller encounter full of volleyball
techniques. When some of Pipeline players come to the
top performance it is difficult to stop them and that
was the case for the Asha Makuto, Lucy Chege and the
veteran Esther Gipkosgei who showed their consistency to
win the match. The improper reception and the weak
service were the main problems in the Algerian team so
they couldn’t withstand in the first and second sets,
but they improved a lot in the third set to win
comfortably due to the spikes of Aicha Neznate and Nawal
Mansouri and the good setting of Sonia Nadi. They were
near to draw 2-2 at the end of the fourth set but they
missed the critical points to lose 3-1.
Pipelines led the pool as they improved their win- loss
ratio to 2-0, while Bejaia becomes second with 1-1
record.
Water Sports of Ethiopia proved the great improvement in
their country’s volleyball as they achieved the first
victory over VC Club of RD Congo 3-0 (25-13, 25-20,
25-17) after a disciplined line up showing good
reception and attacks. The Ethiopian team improved their
record to 1-1 while VC dropped to 0-2
Pool B
The defending champions Prisons of Kenya set their
second victory in a raw over Bafia evolution of Cameroon
3-1 (25-9, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17). Prisons team was the
dominant side in the first set after they surprised
their opponent of their strong services that disturbed
their reception. The skillful setter Jane Wacu led the
combination that allowed her team to win the set widely.
By the time Bafia arranged their reception and attacks
that allowed them to build up the attacks through the
setter Bissene Barana, but the strong attackers Lydia
Maiyo and Esther Mwombe led their team to win the second
set 25-19. Bafia team performances reached the utmost in
the third set as they won through the tight block of
Mbang Mbetmi and Djantou before Prisons returned back to
their peak to win the fourth set and the match 3-1.
Bafia improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0 to lead the
pool, while Bafia dropped to 1-1.
Kutlwano of Botswana clinched their first victory over
Les AS of Burundi in straight sets 25-18, 25-13, 25-19.
The winners overwhelmed the net action all through the
match due to their better block and attacks.
Botswana team improved their record to 1-1, while
Burundi team dropped to 0-2.
Pool C
KC Bank of Kenya proved their consistency and set their
competition second victory over Injis of Cameroon 3-0
(25-21, 25-23, 25-14). The Kenyan team succeeded to win
the critical points of each set through the steady
performance of the team stars specially the centers
Margaret Tsinyeni and Jackline Barasa. Injis team
emerged many times specially during the second set when
they led several times due to the good action of their
spikers Roline Tatchou and Esther Mballa.
KCB improved their record to 2-0 to lead the pool with 4
points while Injis dropped to 1-1.
Kampala VC of Uganda fought for more than three hours
interrupted by several power problems in the hall
lightening to clinch their competition first victory
over Olympic Jadida of Morocco in a five set match 3-2
(25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-11). After Kampala won
widely the first set, Jadida returned back with their
disciplined defense to win the second set, but again
Kampala fought back to lead 2-1 before Jadida worked
hard to extend the match to tiebreak. The Moroccan team
was 8-4 ahead at the court turn but the highly motivated
Ugandan team succeeded to come back on time to win the
tiebreak 15-11.
Pool D
Al Ahly of Egypt rebounded after a sluggish start to set
their first victory over the struggling Canon Ndjili
team of RD Congo in straight sets 26-24, 25-10, 25-17.
The Congo team had a marvelous start in attacks that
disturbed their opponent through the skillful setting by
Nasamba Nzuzi who led many fast attacks. After Canon led
20-14, Al Ahly returned back to the match after some
substitutions from the coach Raouf Abdel Kader and they
won the set narrowly 26-24. It was easier afterwards for
Ahly to overwhelm the match through the centers Hagar
Badr and Ingy El Shamy.
After only 11 hours Al Ahly played their second match
against APR of Rwanda and succeeded to win 3-1 (25-22,
19-25, 25-12, 25-13). Al Ahly started the match with the
peak performance through of most of the standing line up
to win the first set. The Kenyan star Dorcas Ndasaba
used her 20 years of experience and penetrated Ahly
block permanently to win the set 25-19 and held the
score to draw. With most of Ahly players reaching their
top form it was easy to win the third and fourth sets
and the match 3-1.
Al Ahly leads the pool with a record of 2-0, while APR
becomes second with 1-1 record.
