The big favorites achieve second victory


Nairobi, Kenya, March 31, 2009- the big favorites Pipelines, Kenya Prisons and KC Bank of Kenya and Al Ahly of Egypt achieved their second victory in a row to secure a semifinal slot after the second day of the 2009 Women’s African clubs Championship here at Moi International Sports Complex of Kasarani in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday. The second day showed also the first victory for Kampala VC of Uganda, Water Sports of Ethiopia and Kutlwano of Botswana.

The problem of the frequent electricity interruption was repeated many times in the indoor hall forcing the referees to stop the matches many times.

In an unrecorded occasion Al Ahly of Egypt accepted to play two matches in the same day as they played Canon Ndjili in the morning in their postponed match from the first day and then played the second against APR of Rwanda near midnight.

The second match of Pool D between Federal prisons of Ethiopia and Canon Ndjili of Cameroon was postponed to the rest day on Thursday.

Pool A

The organizers Kenya pipelines downed the favorites Naceria Bejaia of Algeria 3-1 (25-16, 25-15, 17-25, 25-22) after a thriller encounter full of volleyball techniques. When some of Pipeline players come to the top performance it is difficult to stop them and that was the case for the Asha Makuto, Lucy Chege and the veteran Esther Gipkosgei who showed their consistency to win the match. The improper reception and the weak service were the main problems in the Algerian team so they couldn’t withstand in the first and second sets, but they improved a lot in the third set to win comfortably due to the spikes of Aicha Neznate and Nawal Mansouri and the good setting of Sonia Nadi. They were near to draw 2-2 at the end of the fourth set but they missed the critical points to lose 3-1.

Pipelines led the pool as they improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0, while Bejaia becomes second with 1-1 record.

Water Sports of Ethiopia proved the great improvement in their country’s volleyball as they achieved the first victory over VC Club of RD Congo 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-17) after a disciplined line up showing good reception and attacks. The Ethiopian team improved their record to 1-1 while VC dropped to 0-2

Pool B

The defending champions Prisons of Kenya set their second victory in a raw over Bafia evolution of Cameroon 3-1 (25-9, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17). Prisons team was the dominant side in the first set after they surprised their opponent of their strong services that disturbed their reception. The skillful setter Jane Wacu led the combination that allowed her team to win the set widely. By the time Bafia arranged their reception and attacks that allowed them to build up the attacks through the setter Bissene Barana, but the strong attackers Lydia Maiyo and Esther Mwombe led their team to win the second set 25-19. Bafia team performances reached the utmost in the third set as they won through the tight block of Mbang Mbetmi and Djantou before Prisons returned back to their peak to win the fourth set and the match 3-1.

Bafia improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0 to lead the pool, while Bafia dropped to 1-1.

Kutlwano of Botswana clinched their first victory over Les AS of Burundi in straight sets 25-18, 25-13, 25-19. The winners overwhelmed the net action all through the match due to their better block and attacks.

Botswana team improved their record to 1-1, while Burundi team dropped to 0-2.

Pool C

KC Bank of Kenya proved their consistency and set their competition second victory over Injis of Cameroon 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-14). The Kenyan team succeeded to win the critical points of each set through the steady performance of the team stars specially the centers Margaret Tsinyeni and Jackline Barasa. Injis team emerged many times specially during the second set when they led several times due to the good action of their spikers Roline Tatchou and Esther Mballa.

KCB improved their record to 2-0 to lead the pool with 4 points while Injis dropped to 1-1.

Kampala VC of Uganda fought for more than three hours interrupted by several power problems in the hall lightening to clinch their competition first victory over Olympic Jadida of Morocco in a five set match 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-11). After Kampala won widely the first set, Jadida returned back with their disciplined defense to win the second set, but again Kampala fought back to lead 2-1 before Jadida worked hard to extend the match to tiebreak. The Moroccan team was 8-4 ahead at the court turn but the highly motivated Ugandan team succeeded to come back on time to win the tiebreak 15-11.

Pool D

Al Ahly of Egypt rebounded after a sluggish start to set their first victory over the struggling Canon Ndjili team of RD Congo in straight sets 26-24, 25-10, 25-17. The Congo team had a marvelous start in attacks that disturbed their opponent through the skillful setting by Nasamba Nzuzi who led many fast attacks. After Canon led 20-14, Al Ahly returned back to the match after some substitutions from the coach Raouf Abdel Kader and they won the set narrowly 26-24. It was easier afterwards for Ahly to overwhelm the match through the centers Hagar Badr and Ingy El Shamy.

After only 11 hours Al Ahly played their second match against APR of Rwanda and succeeded to win 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-12, 25-13). Al Ahly started the match with the peak performance through of most of the standing line up to win the first set. The Kenyan star Dorcas Ndasaba used her 20 years of experience and penetrated Ahly block permanently to win the set 25-19 and held the score to draw. With most of Ahly players reaching their top form it was easy to win the third and fourth sets and the match 3-1.

Al Ahly leads the pool with a record of 2-0, while APR becomes second with 1-1 record.
