Nairobi, Kenya, March 30, 2009- In an opening day full
of problems all the favorite teams KC Bank, Prisons, and
Pipelines of Kenya as well as Bafia and Injis of
Cameroon and Naceria Bejaia of Algeria achieved their
first victory in the 2009 Women’s African clubs
Championship here at Moi International Sports Complex of
Kasarani in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday. The frequent
electricity interruption happening to the hall disturbed
the schedule in the competition’s first day as the first
two matches had to stop more than three times due to
hall lightening problem making a delay of about three
hours to start the matches. The promising APR team of
Rwanda was the biggest fighters as they spend more than
two hours in a five set match to defeat the surprising
Federal Prisons of Ethiopia.
The last match of the day between Al Ahly of Egypt and
Canon Ndjili of RD Congo was postponed due to the late
end of the former matches till the midnight.
The matches were attended by CAVB Control Committee
President Tom Omongole, SOC Delegate Mrs. Touria Aarab,
Referee Delegate Salamba, CC member Jacob Owiti, CAVB
technical director Howyda Mondy and most of the Kenyan
volleyball federation board led by the president
Wathiaka Kioni
Pool A
The organizer Pipelines of Kenya swept Water Sports of
Ethiopia 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-11). The winners played
with their veteran stars led by the oldest Esther
Jepkosgei and the right attacker Lucy Chege and
succeeded to overwhelm the action by the net as well as
the backline defense through the national team libero
Abigael Tarus. Pipelines led the pool with 2 points from
a win loss ratio of 1-0 while the Ethiopian team becomes
0-1.
Naceria Bejaia of Algeria edged VC of RD Congo 3-0
(25-18, 25-15, 25-21) after good performance from the
Algerian promising players. The losers fought well
specially in the third set but the Algerians were more
disciplined in both defense and attacks to win the
straight sets match easily. Bejaia becomes 1-0 in their
win- loss ratio while VC dropped to 0-1.
Pool B
The defending champions Prisons of Kenya started their
was successfully in the competition as they clinched a
straight sets victory (25-12, 25-11, 25-14) over the
less experienced Kutlwano of Botswana. The Kenyan team
playing with highly experienced stars like the setter
Jane Wacu and the center Lydia Maiyo found it easy to
win the match although their head coach David Lungaho
made many substitutions to give the chance to some bench
players.
Prisons finished the first day at the second position of
the pool with the point ratio behind Bafia of Cameroon
with a record of 1-0. Kutlwano dropped to 0-1.
Bafia of Cameroon controlled everything technically to
edge their opponent Les AS of Burundi easily in straight
sets (25-7, 25-7, 25-4) after a good performance from
the setter Bissene Barana and the efficient attackers
Iroume Mekong and Asta Gamkoua. Bafia ends the first day
with 2 points from 1-0 record while Les AS dropped to
0-1.
Pool C
KC Bank of Kenya bounced over Kampala VC of Uganda 3-0
(25-11, 25-19, 25-19). The Kenyan team middle blockers
Jackline Barasa and the veteran Margret Tsinyeni played
an important role in this victory with their impermeable
block and fast attacks from position 3. Although Kampala
VC struggled during many parts of the match through the
spikes of Nantege Gloria and Okiror Lillian specially in
the second set they couldn’t withstand the Kenyan
attacks from all the net positions and lost in straight
sets.
KC Bank led the pool with a record of 1-0 while Kampala
dropped to 0-1.
Injis of Cameroon rebounded from one set behind to
defeat Olympic Jadida of Morocco 3-1 (19-25, 25-22,
25-17, 25-19) in a thriller encounter settled through
the better blocker of the Cameroon team. Although
losing, the Moroccan team proved their consistency in
the first participation for their country since 6 years.
Injis finished the first day in the second position with
the point ratio after KCB with 1-0 record while Jadida
dropped to 0-1.
Pool D
APR of Rwanda fought for more than two hours to pull off
a difficult victory over the highly motivated Federal
Prisons team of Ethiopia in the day’s only tiebreak 3-2
(25-20, 25-27, 20-25, 25-19, 15-9). After the Rwandan
team won the first set, Prisons of Ethiopia came to the
match efficiently as they improved their backline
defense and the attacks through the efficient spikers
Kebede Fanu and Ashrak Atifa and won two successive
sets. When everyone thought that it was going to 3-1
victory for the Ethiopian team, the Kenyan veteran who
came to the Rwandan team with her previous coach of KC
Bank Paul bitok played her best and scored from her
unstoppable hits from both the front and backlines and
won the fourth set to extend the match to the tiebreak
