Mauritius sets the third consecutive victory to win Africa Pool B tournament


Maputo, Mozambique, May 3, 2009- The well-organized Mauritius Men’s volleyball team continued their winning streak and cruised past Malawi in the third and final day of the African Pool B tournament in the 2010 Men’s World Championship held here at Maxaquene Maputo hall in Mozambique capital. Mauritius wins the four nations tour to qualify to the third round playing in the African Pool E next August. The tournament’s final day showed also the second victory for Zimbabwe over the host team Mozambique but both teams secured third round slots being second and third of this tournament.

With their steady performance all through the competition Mauritius team downed Malawi 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-10) in 61 minutes. The winners were the better side in all volleyball skills specially in the reception and blocking owing to the bigger experience of their players. The victory improved Mauritius win- loss ratio to 3-0 to win the tournament with the full mark 6 points to qualify to the third round Africa pool E with Cameroon, South Africa and Zimbabwe the second of this competition. Malawi dropped to 0-3 to finish at the bottom of the table with three points.

Zimbabwe rebounded since losing in the opening day and set their second consecutive victory over the organizers Mozambique in front of their supporters 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 31-29) in 86 minutes. After Zimbabwe led comfortably in the first and second sets, Mozambique came back late in the third set and were near to win until Zimbabwe regained their rhythm to win the tournament’s most exciting set 31-29. The victory improved Zimbabwe record to 2-1 to finish second with 5 points and secure a third round slot in Africa Pool E. Mozambique dropped to 1-2 to finish third with 4 points but also secured a third round berth in Pool D with Tunisia, Kenya and another team determined later from Africa pool A.
