Mauritius crashes Mozambique and Zimbabwe secures first victory


Maputo, Mozambique, May 2, 2009- The emerging Mauritius team swept the host team Mozambique in the second day of the Africa Pool B tournament of the 2010 Men’s World Championship to lead the 4 nations pool held here at Maxaquene Maputo hall in Mozambique capital. Zimbabwe achieved their first victory over Malawi to compete for the three slots of the pool qualifying to the third round.

In front of the host spectators the surprising Mauritius team prepared well for the tournament prevented the dreams of the host team to win the tournament as they clinched a straight sets victory over Mozambique 25-11, 25-16, 25-16 in 70 minutes. Although Mozambique team was motivated to win the match, Mauritius proved their consistency from the start and led all the net action to win the match easier than expected. The victory improved Mauritius win- loss ratio to 2-0 to lead the pool with 4 points, while Mozambique dropped to 1-1 to come back at the third position.

The well-prepared Zimbabwe team surprised the attendance with their efficient performance to defeat the winless Malawi 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-13) in 84 minutes. The victory improved Zimbabwe win- loss ratio to 1-1 to improve their ranking to the second position with the point ratio ahead of the organizers Mozambique, while Malawi dropped to 0-2 to finish the second day at the bottom of the pool.

The competition third and final day will feature to matches when Mozambique fight for a third round spot against Zimbabwe, while Mauritius seeks third straight victory against Malawi.
