Mozambique and Mauritius claim first victory


Maputo, Mozambique, April 1- the organizers Mozambique and the emerging Mauritius Men’s volleyball teams started the way successfully in the Pool B African qualification tournament of the 2010 World championships after both teams achieved their first victory over Malawi and Zimbabwe respectively here at Maxaquene Maputo Hall in the capital of Mozambique on Friday.

The host team supported by the home spectators overcame the sluggish start as they came from one set behind to clinch 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-10, 25-16) over the new comers Malawi in 94 minutes. After they lost the first set, Mozambique improved their reception and backline defense to control the match and they went through to win three successive sets and lead the round robin pool by point ratio ahead of Mauritius.

After their good preparation in the last few years Mauritius team also rebounded after losing the first set and they won three successive sets to overcome Zimbabwe 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21) in 114 minutes.

The competition second day will feature 2 matches on Saturday as the losers of the first day Malawi and Zimbabwe meet in the first match, while the winners Mozambique plays their compatriots Mauritius in the competition early final.
