Big transfer in Kenyan volleyball

Four KCB players move to prisons team

Nairobi, Kenya, June 24, 2008- Africa women’s volleyball champions Kenya Prisons have poached four players from rival club Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).

The players, who ditched the bankers are Salome Wanjala, Florence Bosire, Loice Tarus and Esther Mwombe.

Prisons coach, David Lung’aho, said: 'Prisons in their efforts to create a formidable team have acquired four players from KCB.'

'We have some of the best players in the continent, but recruitment must be a continuous process for the team to grow stronger and stronger,' he said.

But KCB coach Paul Bitok said they were not bitter about the departure of the players.

'It is unfortunate that they are leaving our team but we shall do our best to remain at the top of things,' Bitok said in Nairobi on Monday.

“Personally I shall never stand on the way of anyone out to seek greener pastures,' he said.

All the players were in the KCB team that won the East African Clubs Championship in Nairobi and finished third in the African Clubs Championship in Egypt last month.

Prisons provide the bulk of players to the national team, including Praxides Agala, Jane Wacu, Mercy Moim and Judy Tarus.

The move to sign the players who are potential national team materials is likely to see a concentration of stars at one base and weak opponents in the league that features four teams.
