Kenya beat Algeria to claim final round berth

June 24, 2005, Nairobi, Kenya - It was thrills and spills as two times Africa's representatives at the Olympic Games Kenya used home ground advantage to beat Algeria 3-2 (24-26, 28-26, 23-25,25-21, 15-12) in the "final" at the 2006 Women’s World Championship African first round tournament – Pool B at a packed Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani indoor gymnasium in Nairobi.
After the final whistle, Kenyan players and home fans broke into song and dance while Algerian players who were also considered favourites to book Africa's third ticket to 2006 World Championships in Japan after Egypt and Cameroon broke down in tears.
Makadara member of parliament Hon. Reuben Ndolo, Commissioner for Sports in Kenya Gordon Oluoch and Isaac Kalua of Kenya National Sports Council led Kenyan fans in giving support to the home team.
Kenya who fielded their best lineup could not afford to lose the match what with live television coverage from the national broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, 100 local and international journalists accredited to cover the tournament and a partisan home crowd who packed the 6,000 seater gymnasium to capacity to cheer them on.[ Ranking ]
