Kenya
beat Algeria to claim final round berth
June 24, 2005, Nairobi, Kenya
- It was thrills and spills as two times Africa's
representatives at the Olympic Games Kenya used home
ground advantage to beat Algeria 3-2 (24-26, 28-26,
23-25,25-21, 15-12) in the "final" at the 2006 Women’s
World Championship African first round tournament – Pool
B at a packed Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani
indoor gymnasium in Nairobi.
After the final whistle, Kenyan players and home fans
broke into song and dance while Algerian players who
were also considered favourites to book Africa's third
ticket to 2006 World Championships in Japan after Egypt
and Cameroon broke down in tears.
Makadara member of parliament Hon. Reuben Ndolo,
Commissioner for Sports in Kenya Gordon Oluoch and Isaac
Kalua of Kenya National Sports Council led Kenyan fans
in giving support to the home team.
Kenya who fielded their best lineup could not afford to
lose the match what with live television coverage from
the national broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Corporation,
100 local and international journalists accredited to
cover the tournament and a partisan home crowd who
packed the 6,000 seater gymnasium to capacity to cheer
them on.[
