Pipelines Defeated Al-Ahly and Kept the
Trophy in Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya, April 10-: Pipelines
team of Kenya used the home crown to keep
the trophy of the 20th Women's African Cup
of Clubs Champions in their hands sweeping
Al-Ahly team of Egypt in straight sets
(25-18, 25-21, 25-18) in the final match of
the competition held in Moi International
sports centre in the Kenyan capital of
Nairobi in front of 9.000 spectators.
The match was attended by Mr. Mwangi
Kinjuri, the ass. Minister of Energy, Mr.
Gordon Oluoch, Commissioner for sports, Mr.
George Okungy, the managing director of
Kenya Pipelines, Mr. Joshua Okutte, Chairman
of Kenya National sports council and Mr.
Ibrahim Efumbi , Chairman of Kenya
Volleyball Federation. The final was covered
also by the Kenya main TV which is Kenya
Broadcasting Cooperation (KBC) and most of
the local newspapers and Media.
Pipelines managed the final match against
Al-Ahly easier than expected as they played
a fast game to disturb their younger
opponents using their better experience and
let them to do many mistakes. Pipelines
controlled the match through their big guns
Catherine Wanjiru, who was chosen as the
most valuable player and Esther Jepkosegei,
the best spiker in the competition aided by
the solid block of Emily Chemutai and
Leonidas Kamende.
" I'm very proud of my team which won the
trophy for the second time in raw and happy
with their performance which allowed them to
win the title” Said Pipelines Head Coach,
David Lung'aho after the final. "I hope to
continue with the team to win the cup next
year. We played a fast game and this
disturbed our opponent's performance. I want
now to add some young players to the team to
enhance our future" Added David.
Ahly Head Coach, Raouf Abdelkader said sadly
"My team played the match without trust to
achieve the victory so they couldn't control
their performance and appeared disturbed and
lacked concentration. Our most important
defect was the first pass as it didn't allow
the players to apply my strategy"
In the match of third place KCB achieved the
first victory ever over their Compatriots,
Telkom 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 27-25) to win the
bronze Medal.
The winner appeared with high performance
only two month after the team established.
Semifinal:
Al-Ahly and Pipelines qualified To Final
Spot
Nairobi, Kenya, April
9-: Al-Ahly team of Egypt and
pipelines of Kenya reached to the final spot
of the 20th African Cup of Clubs Champions
after both
had a thriller victories over Telkom and KC
Bank of Kenya respectively in the two
semifinal matches held in Moi International
sports complex in Kasarani in the Kenyan
Capital of Nairobi. Al-Ahly will meet
Pipelines in the final Sunday, while Telkom
will play KC Bank in the third place match.
In one of the most exciting matches of the
competition Al-Ahly deserved a big victory
over the solid Telkom team and came from two
sets behind to win 3-2 in a thriller five
setters (22-25, 22-25, 28-26, 25-23, 17-15)
in 140 minutes of fantastic volleyball.
Telkom started the match aided by a big
number of spectators so they managed to win
the first two sets 25-22 and 25-22 after a
group of successful spikes of Esther Mwombe
and Edna Totich. They surprised Ahly players
and used their weak first pass to win the
critical points of each set. Ahly
performance raised to the top starting from
the third set to come from five points
behind 20-15 and win the set 28-26 after a
thrilling performance led by Amina Foad,
Yara Abdel Karim and Sherihan Sameh. They
continued in this high rhythm to win the
fourth set 25-23 and extending the match to
a tie break. Ahly players passed the most
difficult stage of the match when they were
11-14 behind to win the set 17-15 after a
group of successful spikes aided by the
strong backline defense of the libero Sara
Talaat to win the magnificent match 3-2
Pipelines qualified to the final for the
third successive time to defend its last
trophy achieved in Senegal 2004. Pipelines
in top form regained the rhythm after losing
the first set to defeat KC Bank 3-1 (23-25,
25-19, 25-11, 25-15) in 93 Minutes of
exciting volleyball. Pipelines coach, David
Lung'aho slow down the rhythm to control the
match starting from the second and used the
key stars Catherine Wanjiru and Esther
Jepkosgei to win the second and third sets
easily 25-19 and 25-11.
The young promising star Asha Makuto was the
surprise of the match as she used here
talented spikes to penetrate the KC Bank
block to win the fourth set 25-15 using the
disturbance occurring at their side.
In the matches of ranking Chlef of Algeria
won the fifth position after a valuable
victory over their Compatriots 3-1 (22-25,
25-22, 25-19, 25-13). ARSU of Seychelles
left the competition in the seventh place
after beating Inter club of Congo 3-1
(24-26, 25-23, 25-13, 25-16).

Thrillers
matches in Semifinal after Pipelines

Nairobi, Kenya, April 7-: The
semifinal of the 20th African Cup of clubs
champions will show two thrillers face off
On Saturday when Al-Ahly of Egypt meet
Telkom
of Kenya and Pipelines plays Kenya
Commercial Bank (KCB). The last two matches
in Pool B of the preliminary round showed
pipelines of Kenya clinching a wide victory
over Al-Ahly 3-0 in what is called an early
final of the competition, while the
outsiders Bejaia left the competition with a
victory over National University of Rwanda.
In front of more than 4000 spectators in
Kasarani hall in the Kenyan capital of
Nairobi it was a very interesting match
between the first two favorites for the
trophy as pipelines of Kenya swept Al-Ahly
of Egypt 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-19) in 98
minutes. The Egyptian team showed little
immunity to face the strong Kenyan team led
by the most experienced players in the
continent specially Catherine Wanjiru,
Esther Jepkosgei and Lucy Chege. Ahly head
coach, Raouf Abdelkader managed to share all
his line up in the match in order not to
exhaust the main players before the
important semifinal match, so the Kenyan
team dominate the match from the start till
the end using their wide experience in the
net actions in both blocking and spiking
techniques.
"I asked my players before the match to
continue the victory rhythm and they did
what I want" Said Pipelines coach, David
Lung'aho. "Now we are ready for the
semifinal and for the final after" He added.
Ahly head coach, Raouf Abdelkader said "I
tried to play with all my available players
but I'm not convinced with their
performance. I think now we are looking
forwards to the semifinal match against
Telkom".
Nawal Mansouri and Lydia Oulmou led Bejaia
to have the second victory in the
competition over the outsiders N. University
of Rwanda in straight sets 25-16, 28-26,
25-9. The match showed no motivations as
both teams were eliminated before the match.
Algerian key players finalized the duty in
almost an hour.
Day five:
Ahly
of Egypt with three Kenyan teams in the
semifinal
Nairobi, Kenya, April 6-: three
Kenyan teams will compete with Al-Ahly of
Egypt for the trophy of the 20th African Cup
of Clubs Champions held in Kasarani complex
in the Kenyan Capital of Nairobi. Both Ahly
and pipelines sets their third victory in
raw in pool B over N. University of Rwanda
and ARSU of Seychelles respectively, while
Pool A showed Telkom of Kenya defeating KC
bank, but both had the semifinal tickets of
the pool by set average ahead of Chlef of
Algeria which achieved the second victory
over Inter Club of Congo but eliminated from
the competition.
A-Ahly of Egypt using most of the bench
players needed only 50 minutes to beat
National University of Rwanda in straight
sets (25-13, 25-14, 25-12) to secure a
semifinal spot. Raouf Abdelkader, Al-Ahly
coach played with the second team to relief
his main players for the big battle Thursday
against Pipelines of Kenya. Al- Ahly reserve
players did their utmost to get the
confidence of the coach before the more
important next matches specially Nada ayman,
Nahla Sameh, Hagar Badr and Marwa Yassin. "I
insisted to play with the reserve players to
allow them to get the experience and also to
give more rest for the standing players
before the semifinal match. The young
players, specially Nada ayman, Nahla Sameh
did will in the match" Said Ahly Coach.
Pipelines of Kenya secured the second
semifinal spot in pool B after a wide
victory over ARSU of Seychelles 25-13,
25-23, 25-9. The experienced Pipelines
players, specially Esther Jepkosegei, Lucy
Chege and Catherine Wanjiro succeeded to end
the match easily except in the second set
when ARSU approved their emerging future.
"We were preparing by this match for the
next tough game against Ahly. The most
important is that we already qualified to
the semifinal" Said Pipelines Head Coach,
David Lung'aho.
Telkom came from the nightmare of
elimination from the first round to have a
big victory over KC Bank in straight sets
(25-21, 25-21, 25-17). This wide victory
secured a semifinal spot and also put Telkom
ahead of Pool A, leaving KC Bank in the
second position and both qualified to the
semifinal.
G. Chlef of Algeria achieved the second
victory over Interclub of Congo Brazzaville
3-1 (19-25, 25-8, 25-19, 25-20) and waited
for the last match of the pool know that
they have to leave the competition.
Competition day six will show Thursday the
final matches of pool B as Pipelines will
meet Al-Ahly in a match determining the
first and second places in the pool after
both already secured the semifinal places,
while Bejaia will play N. University of
Rwanda.

of Egypt near a semifinal spot
Nairobi, Kenya, April 5-: Al-Ahly
team of Egypt was the star of the fourth day
of the 20th African Cup of Clubs Champions
as they achieved their second victory in the
critical match against Bejaia of Algeria 3-1
in pool B to cut a long road towards
the semifinal of the competition held in
Kasarani Hall in the Kenyan capital of
Nairobi. In another match ARSU of Seychelles
achieved their first victory in the
competition over N. University of Rwanda 3-0
In what is said the match of pool B, Al-Ahly
the winner of the trophy in 2003 played NC
Bejaia of Algeria, the vice-champions of the
2004 edition in a match of qualification to
the semifinal as both compete with the
defending champions Pipelines for two
semifinal spots. The match was very exciting
but the experience of some key players ended
the match towards the Egyptian side in 90
minutes of fantastic volleyball (25-19,
27-25, 25-20, 25-22).
The wing spikers, Sheihan Sameh, Amina Foad,
and the setter Yosra Abdelkarim played the
key role in Ahly's victory as they succeeded
to stop the Algerian big guns Lydia Oulmou
and Nawal Mansouri.
"This was the match of qualification to the
semifinal" Said the Ahly Coach Raouf
Abdelkader after the match. "We have now to
manage our situation in the next step after
beating this respectable team" He added.
"We played a good Match but we fell in many
mistakes to lose the key points in each set"

KC Bank already secured a spot in the semis.
Pool B will show Ahly vs. N.University and
Pipelines of Kenya vs. ARSU matches.

Kenya, April 4-: Kenyan team again
showed their capacitance as the third day of
the 20th African Cup of Clubs Champions
showed victories for their three
representatives to consolidate their dreams
of having three spots out of four in the
semifinal of the competition held in the
Kenyan capital of Nairobi. KC Bank was the
most spotlighted by the fans in the sports
hall of Kasarani as they had their second
victory in raw over the promising Bejaia
team of Algeria in pool A to be the first
team to secure a spot in the semifinal.
Pipelines of Kenya had also the second
victory over the struggling University of
Rwanda in straight sets but couldn't yet
have a semifinal ticket in the five team's
pool B. the third Kenyan team, Telkom
survived after a surprise fall to Chlef of
Algeria in their first match having the
first victory over Interclub of Congo
Brazzaville. In the fourth match of the day
Bejaia of Algeria had also their first
victory over the promising ARSU team of
Seychelles.
KC Bank of Kenya achieved an impressive
victory over G. Chlef of Algeria the lack
hoarse of the second competition day in
straight sets (25-20, 25-19, 25-19).
Kenyan Head coach Paul Pitok surprised
Chlef team by his attacking tactics which
disturbed them a lot as he used his big gun
Sarah Tod to penetrate Chlef's defense and
win the match. The tired Algerian team
playing the second match in less than 24
hours had many physical problems which
affected their performance.
Pipelines needed 59 minutes to win their
match against University of Rwanda 3-0
(25-12, 25-4, 25-15). Pipelines dominated
the match from the first whistle to win the
three successive sets after the high
performance of the team stars Catherine
Waniru and Emily Chemutai.
NS Bejaia team of Algeria pulled off a
difficult victory in the competition over
the solid ARSU team of Seychelles 3-1
(25-12, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23).

big victory over their compatriot KC Bank to
secure a place in the semifinal.
The competition day four will show two
matches as Ahly of Egypt will meet Bejaia of
Algeria in one of the toughest matches while
ARSU of Seychelles plays University of
Rwanda.

defeated Telkom of Kenya in a thriller five
setter

Kenya, April 3-: In one of the best
matches of the 20th African Cup of Clubs
Champoions, the emerging GS Chlef of Algeria
achieved the first surprise of the
competition defeating one of the most
favorites, Telkom of Kenya in a thriller
five setter match lasting two hours of
exciting volleyball. Al-Ahly of Egypt
started its matches with a comfortable
straight sets victory over ARSU of
Seychelles in the second day of the
competition in Kasarani Hall in the Kenyan
Capital of Nairobi.
Chlef of Algeria used the high performance
of the emerging players to achieve a
thriller victory 3-2 (25-15, 18-25, 19-25,
27-25, 15-5) over the favorites Telkom of
Kenya in two hours of exciting volleyball.
Chlef team started the match with a solid
line up in front of a big attendance of
spectators in Kasarani Hall through the
effective spikes of the international player
Faiza Tsabet and the efficient setter Fatma
Zahraa to win the first set 25-15.
The second and third sets showed a
completely different picture as Telkom team
regained their concentration to win both
25-18 and 25-19 by the effective spikes of
Edna Rotich and Jackline Barasa
the fourth set was the most exciting one as
Chlef won 25-27 after their young players
maintain the rhythm to win also the tie
breaker.
Al-Ahly team started the African Cup
successfully, recording a straight sets
victory (25-19, 25-14, 25-14) over ARSU of
Seychelles.
Egyptian players were more concentrating
using the strong hits of Sherihan Sameh and
the highly technical setting by the
experienced international player Yosra
Abelkarim to win with a minimum effort.
Egyptian coach Raouf Abdelkader expressed
his gratitude to his players who played for
the first time without Tahany Toson, the
best player in history of African
volleyball. "I tried to support my team
psychologically and I think we will use the
first victory to continue our way towards
the trophy" he said.

Nairobi, Kenya, April 2-: the opening
day of the 20th African Cup of Clubs
Championship was a pure Kenyan day when both
teams of the organizing country achieved a
straight sets
victory over their opponents here in
Kasarany Hall in Nairobi, Kenya. The most
favorite and defending champions, Pipelines
of Kenya clinched an important straight sets
victory over KC Bejaia of Algeria in
straight sets, while Commercial Bank also
pulled off another straight sets victory
over Inter Club. The opening ceremony was
attended by CAVB President, Dr. Amr Elwani,
Kenya Volleyball President Ibraham Efombi,
and some of the ambassadors of the
participating countries.
Piplines team of Kenya proved their
consistency to clinch a straight sets
victory over Bejaia of Algeria (25-17,
25-22, 26-24). Pipelines team started the
match with more stable performance and used
the powerful spikers Catherine Wanjiru and
Lucy Chege to penetrate the Algerian team
defense . Bejaia improved their backline
defense starting from the second set to go
gradually through the match using the middle
players Lydia Olmow and Lilia Boululza.
Pipelines continued their attacking
performance to win the match by a group of
tactics by the efficient setter Judith
Serenge.
Commercial Bank of Kenya clinched a straight
sets victory over Inter Club of Congo (25-8,
25-20, 25-19).
Commercial bank of Kenya started the match
aggressively after a group of effective
spikes Mayo Eunice and Wanjala Khatania
using the permeable Interclub block. In the
second set Inter defense improved both at
both backline defense and block to lead 8-5
through the effective setting by Foula
Niekele and the strong hits of Ontsira
Gampou and Bickindou Mpembe. Kenyan team
regained their Rhythm through the wing
spiker from position 4 Rotich Jepbtok to
lead 16-15. They continued their high
performance to win the set 25-20.
The setter of commercial bank team, Janet
Wanja led her team by her efficient setting
to lead, before their opponent played their
best period of the match using the effective
spikes of Ontsira Gampou and Bickindou
Mpembe to lead 15-13 before Kenya regained
their high performance and arranged their
defense to win the set 25-19 and the match
in straight sets.
Competition day two, Sunday will show two
matches as Al-Ahly will meet ARSU of
Seychelles and Telekom of Kenya plays GS
Chelif of Algeria.

Favorite teams in the death pool
Nairobi, Kenya, April 1-: The drawing
of lots of the 20th African Cup of Clubs
Champions held in the Kenyan Capital of
Nairobi put the strong teams in one pool
called death group. The defending champions,
Kenya pipelines, the vice-champions NC
Bejaia of Algeria and the third ranked
Al-Ahly were put in the same pool (pool B)
with Arsu of Seychelles and National
University of Rwanda. Pool A will include
weaker teams; the organizer Kenya commercial
Bank, GS Chief of Algeria, Telecom of Kenya
and Interclub of Congo Brazzaville. The
opening day will show two matches as Bejaia
of Algeria will meet Pipelines in a repeated
last edition's final at 10 am while Inter
club will play Kenya commercial bank at 4
pm.
The competition which will show a record of
nine teams competing for the trophy is
considered the strongest ever women clubs
championship in history.
The drawing of lots ceremony was attended by
CAVB president Dr. Amr Elwani, Control
committee president Tom Omongole of Uganda,
CAVB Technical coordinator Mrs. Howyda Mondy
and Kenya Volleyball Federation secretary
general Mr. Jacob Owite.
Al-Ahly team will play without its famous
star Tahany Toson for the first time in 18
years as she is now taking a volleyball
courses in Leipzig, Germany now. The team is
renewed with some young players.
Kenya team Pipelines is considered one of
the major favorites as it has many of the
Kenyan national team players.
Kenyan coaches name squads for The
Competition
Nairobi, Kenya, March 30-:
Kenya’s three representatives to the 20th
Africa Women’s Volleyball Club
Championships, defending champions Kenya
Pipeline, Telkom Kenya and Kenya Commercial
Bank yesterday named their squads for the
April 1-10 event.
While naming his squad to the championships,
Telkom ladies coach Paul Gitau said they
were determined to wrestle the title from
Kenya Pipeline in view of the fact that
veteran players led by spiker Nancy Lusanji
have made a come back.
Speaking to the press after training at
Kasarani, Gitau who is a former assistant
national women team coach said so far the
players have been responding well to
training and the team was all set for the
continental championships.
“Much as we have a lot of respect for our
opponents more so Egyptian representatives
Ahaly and defending champions Kenya
Pipeline, I am confident that Telkom are
capable of reclaiming the title which they
once dominated,” said Gitau.
Apart from Lusanji other veterans in Telkom
side are Athens Olympic Games team captain
Dorcas Ndasaba, Margaret Indakala, Esther
Barno and Catherine Mabwi who are all
capable of delivering the title to Telkom.
In the Kenya Pipeline camp, coach David
“Demosh” Lung’aho who led the team to
victory during the last edition in Senegal
predicted a tough championship more so with
the record entry of participating teams.
“The championships will definitely be tough
but what I am sure about is that the title
will remain in Kenya since it will be a
three teams assault as such we just can’t
let it slip away infront of our own fans,”
said Lung’aho.
Lung’aho who was the assistant national
coach at Athens Olympic Games pointed out
that he would mainly rely on the players who
won the title in Senegal since in a match
situation you do not change a winning team.
He said veterans like Catherine Wanjiru,
Judith Serenge and Rhoda Lyali have all been
responding well to training and with no
injuries reported in the team they are
rearing to go while very much aware that as
defending champions every team will be out
to stop them.
On his part Kenya Commercial Bank coach Paul
Bitok said he was moulding a team for the
future and participating in the Club
Championships is a very big challenge that
they are determined to face.
“My team is composed mainly of upcoming
players with no international experience at
continental level but that will not stop us
from challenging our opponents for the
title,” said Bitok.
The KCB coach pointed out that among the
players he will be looking forward to are
Halima Bakari, Judy Tarus and Janet Wanja
who all presently enjoying top form and
ready for the championships.

20TH AFRICAN WOMEN’S CLUBS CHAMPIONS

Nairobi, Kenya, March 22 -: A
RECORD twelve foreign teams and three locals
have confirmed their participation in the
20th African Cup of Clubs Champions-Women
which throws off at Moi International Sports
Centre in Nairobi on March 31-April 10.
According to statistics, this is the largest
number of teams ever to have participated in
a volleyball event that has prompted
continental volleyball body CAVB through
Executive Director Charles Panou and
Technical Co-ordinator Howyda Mondy to ask
Kenya Volleyball Federation to contact CAVB
should they have any concern regarding the
large entry and facilities to be offered.
Title favourites and defending champions
Kenya Pipeline currently coached by
assistant national women team coach David
“Demosh” Lung’aho will lead Kenya’s triple
assault along with former champions Telkom
under the tutelage of former national women
team assistant coach Paul Gitau and Kenya
Commercial Bank.
Briefing the press after an inspection tour
of the modern indoor gymnasium at Kasarani
that is the official competition hall for
the championships, Kenya Volleyball
Federation secretary general Jacob Owiti
said they were expecting an exciting
championship in view of the fact that a
record nine teams will be participating.
Apart from defending champions Kenya
Pipeline, Telkom and Kenya Commercial Bank,
Owiti who was accompanied by KVF President
Ibrahim Efumbi, Vice President madam Grace
Minja and National Treasurer Kenneth Tonui
said another title favourite Alahly from
Egypt and Elshams also from Egypt have
confirmed participation in the
championships.
Other teams coming for the championship that
is expected to be a battle between Kenyan
teams and their Egyptian rivals are Tanzania
Prisons (Tanzania), National University of
Rwanda (Rwanda), VC DCMP/K (Congo Kinshasa),
ASEC MIMOSA (Cote d’Ivoire), INJS and AES
SONEL (Cameroon), GS chlef and NC Bejaia
(Algeria), Inter Club (Congo Brazzaville)
and Kampala City Council VB (Uganda).
“As at now we are fully set and waiting for
the D-Day. My only appeal to the foreign
teams coming for the championships is that
they should confirm to us their flight
schedules since as hosts we would like to
make prior arrangements how they will be met
at the airport,” said Owiti.
The KVF secretary general who will be
responsible for the championships said while
Kasarani will host all the matches, teams
will train at Annex based at Kasarani
Complex and at Nyayo National Stadium west
of Nairobi.

the KVF Press Officer and equipments like
computers, telephones and fax machines will
be installed in time for the championships,”
Owiti said.
Owiti said since Kenya was honoured to host
the coming championships, KVF immediately
set up various sub committees that have been
holding meetings to ensure that the event is
successful.
While Owiti will be responsible for the
championships, Efumbi has also been given
the role of President of the Organizing
Committee and with their many years
experience as sports administrators in
Kenya, the championships are expected to be
a great success.
