2005 Women's African Gala Championship- Nigeria:
Nigeria and Egypt won in the opening
Both African teams Egypt and Nigeria had decisive victories in the opening day of the African Women Gala in the Indoor sports Hall, National Stadium of Abuja, Nigeria as Egypt has a valuable victory over England in straight sets, while Nigeria defeated Island in a thriller match attracted the audiences.
The opening matches were held in presence of the National sports authority and diplomatic bodies and many volleyball spectators; the opening ceremony was headed by the Minister of sports and Social development, Dr Saidu Samaila Sambawa.
After the opening ceremony, the first match showed the host country Nigeria playing Iceland as Nigeria had a fantastic 3-1 victory(23-25, 25-10, 25-13, 25-14).
The first set was showed much thrills as the score ran very close from the beginning till the end with only one or two points of difference. Nigeria players under stress in front of their fans committed many mistakes to lose the first set 23/25.
In the second set they players recovered and regained their confidence and won by 25/15, then the following two sets due to the high performance of many players specially, Jamlet Lady, Egbum Dorothy, the captain Onuoha Chinyere, Amadi Christiana and Dusu Esther
Island team Captain Sigurdardottir who is playing in USA, was the most prominent player in the Island team.
In the second match Egypt did the job quickly against England and won 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-10) in a match showed high volleyball skills. Still Egyptian Captain, Tahany Toson coming as one of the most prominent stars in the continent.
