Nigeria and
Kenya to Final Spot
Abuja, Nigeria, September 13-:
The host team Nigeria and the runner up of the last competition
Kenya secured the final vacancies in the fifteenth Women's African
Nations
Championship here in the indoor Hall of the National Stadium of
Abuja, Nigeria after their victories over the defending champions
Egypt and Tunisia respectively in the semifinal matches on Monday.
In a match full of thrills, Nigeria used the home crowd to claim a
3-1 victory (25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 26-24) over Egypt in 103 minutes
of exciting volleyball. Nigeria was dominant in all net actions to
lead from the start using the weak Egyptian back line defense. The
second set was the best for Egypt when they used the strong spikers
Ingy El Shamy and Hagar Badr to win the set before Nigeria
controlled the match through their solid block to win the third and
fourth sets comfortably.
In one of the most exciting matches of the competition, Kenya used
the experienced stars Emily Chemutay and Ndasaba Dorcas to pull off
a narrow victory 3-2 (25-15, 21-25, 20-25, 25-10, 15-13) over the
emerging Tunisia in 99 minutes. Tunisia showed high quality
volleyball through the stars Rafrafi and El Ghoul but the experience
settled the match for the Kenyan team.
Nigeria will meet Kenya in the final on Wednesday while Egypt plays
Tunisia for the bronze medal on Tuesday.
