WOMEN'S AFRICAN OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION- DAY ONE

EGYPT TOOK THE REVENGE FROM NIGERIA


Nairobi, Kenya, January 8-: Egypt took the revenge from Nigeria in the opening day of Women's African Olympic Qualification as they went from one set behind 1-2 to an exciting five setter victory in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Kenya had a straight sets victory over Seychelles to lead the table in the first day. The opening ceremony was held in the big Kasarani hall in presence of 2500 spectators in presence of the Kenyan sports Minister, Mrs. Lina Chalata followed by the two matches.

Egypt could manage their situation after they lost the third set when Nigeria led by two sets to one as they won the fourth, then the tie- break in the same way they lost against the same team in the final of All Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria October 2003 and this made Egypt in a good situation in Athens 2004 Qualification (21-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16, 15-8)

The first set showed Nigerian predominance by the net owing to the active work of Onuhoa Chinyere to win the set 25-21. Egypt players increased their work and improve their defense by Tahany tosson to win the second set 25-19. Again Nigeria showed their attacking complexes led by their stars Adegbenjo Bunmi and Egbum Dorothy to win the third set 25-23. Egypt head coach, Hesham Badrawy modified his tactics to overcome the efficient spikes of Nigerian strong players and after a group of hits of Tahany and Dina Assal Egypt won the fourth set 25-16 before continuing their solid block to win the tie- break 15-8.

In the second match Kenyan team led by the European based star Violet Barasa, found it easy to have a straight sets victory over the young aged Seychelles players to win 25-19, 25-14, 25-12. Kenyan Coach, Muge Abdul tried to give rest to his players before their two big clashes against Egypt, Friday and Nigeria, Saturday.
