WOMEN'S
AFRICAN OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION- DAY THREE
SUPERB KENYA TO ATHENS OLYMPICS
Nairobi, Kenya, January 10-: the superb Kenya women team had the
Olympic berth gaining the third successive victory over the
solid Nigerian team 3-1 (25-19, 15-21, 21-25, 25-10) in the
final day of the Olympic Qualification Tour Saturday in the
Kenyan capital Nairobi. The African champions had a useless
victory over Seychelles in straight sets to get the second
place.
In front of more than the maximum capacity of Kazarani Hall
(about 9000 spectators) the crowed noise made it difficult for
the Nigerian to control the match specially the low experienced
young players. The Kenyan stars specially the European based
Violet Barasa and Lucy chege controlled the net from the start
and didn't allow Nigeria to use its tall spikers like Onuhoa
Chinyere and Egbum Dorothy. Kenya won the first and second sets
easily 25-19 and 25-21. Nigeria players reached their utmost
performance in the third set using the mistakes of Kenyan
trusted players to win the set 25-21 before the Kenyan regained
their performance to win the fourth set 25-10 easily to get the
Olympic ticket.
In a low spirit match it was easy for Egypt to have the fastest
victory in the competition 25-6, 25-20, 25-14 to get the second
place but losing Africa top position which they had in 2003 when
they represented the continent in the World Cup in Japan.
