Girls U-18 African Nations Championship |
final day:
Egypt and Tunisia secured World
Championship Vacancies
Cairo, Egypt,
January 23-: Egypt and Tunisia girls U-18 secured the African
Vacancies in 2005 Girls U-18 World Championship known to be held in
Macao next August after they ended the seventh Girls U-18 African
Nations’ Championship in Cairo, Egypt ranked first and second
respectively. The third and final day of the competition showed
Egypt sweeping Algeria in straight sets (25-16, 25-13, 25-4) in less
than an hour.
This result put Egypt on top of the three Nations competition with
four points followed by Tunisia, (was in a rest in the final day),
second with three points. Algeria finished the competition third
with two points after losing against both other teams.
The final match showed a great progress in the skills of African
girls specially in the attacking tactics by the net. Egyptian
players showed their best performance since establishment of the
team specially the central blocker Hagar Maged and the wing spiker
Marwa Abdel Razek.
Algerian team was competitive only in the first set using the strong
spiker Zohra Bensalem and the solid block of Amel Ouzegdouh to go
point by point with Egypt till the second technical time out when
Egypt led the net by Hagar to end the set 25-16.
The Algerian players felt depression in the second and third sets to
lose easily 25-13 and 25-4 respectively after a group of spikes from
Hagar from position 3 and Marwa from position 2.
The Egyptian team had the most experienced players in the
competition because it had seven players who participate in the
bigger age category being participated in the Women U- 20 African
Nations Championship in Abuja, Nigeria in December 2004 where they
won also the crown. Those players thus have to choose to participe
in one of the two World Championships in the same time, namely 2005
Women U-20 World Championship in Turkey and 2005 Girls U-18 World
Championship in Macao both 23- 31 July 2005.
Egyptian coach Hesham Badrawy said happily; We had now all the women
continental crowns in all age categories as we won the last senior
women championship in Kenya 2003, followed by the under 20 cup in
2004 then now the under 18 in 2005. he added that some of these
young players will join the first team in the coming 2006 World
Championship qualification next March to get enough experience
before the World Championship.
