AFRICA GAMES- COMPETITION DAY TWO:
THE HOSTS AND ALGERIA .. THE STARS OF THE DAY
Abuja, Nigeria, October 12-: Algeria and Nigeria men and women
teams were the happiest in the second day of the eighth All
Africa Games here in Abuja, Nigeria as the four teams clinched
victories over their opponents to lead their pools. Nigeria men
and women had both victories over Ghanaian teams in presence of
Dr. Sam Egwu, the executive Governor of Abia state and his wife.
Algeria men and women had straight sets win over Senegal and
Mozambique respectively. Egypt men got their second victory in
raw over Seychelles.
MEN'S COMPETITION
Thomas Aroko and Adamu Jonah of Nigeria led their team to clinch
a 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-21,25-23) victory over Ghana in the most
exciting match of second day. Nigeria achieved the victory
deploying the artistry of the team captain Thomas who regained
his performance and was the match best scorer. Ghana team made
an exciting second set to win 25-22 after a good performance of
this year's best player in Ghana, Seidu Ajanaku.
In a one side game between Algeria and Senegal it was easy for
the Algerians to lead from the start due to the dominant net
action in spiking and blocking by Fares Aberkane and Ali Kerboua
to win in straight sets 25-20, 25-19, 25-19. Senegal best
players Saba Ndior was injured by sprain ankle to affect his
team in the final set.
Egyptian coach, Vesline Vikavate seeded new blood in his team
from the start of their match against Seychelles to win
3-0(25-23, 25-20, 25-15) . He played with a different line up
bushing the 18 years old Ahmed Salah and Ayman Foad. Seychelles
began very active by their solid back line defense to lead 8-3
by the spikes of Guylly Bijoux. Afterwards Egypt team regained
their performance and Hamdy Elsafy led the team by his spikes to
win the set 25-23. In the second set Egypt team became more
disciplined as Wael Said and Ayman Foad succeeded to organize
the block and spikes to win 25-20. The third set showed easier
win for the Egyptian 25-15.
In a match between the outsiders Rwanda pulled off a 3-1 (25-17,
25-27, 25-18, 25-21) victory over Botswana. Elie Mutabazi and
Eric Kumuyange of the winner were the stars of the match.
WOMEN'S COMPETITION
The promising Algerian women team had a straight sets win over
Mozambique 25-13, 25- 12, 27-25. The young Algerian star Faiza
Tsabet-18 y- led here team efficiently by here effective spikes
and digging, with here teammate Lilia Boulouixza the best
blocker in the match. Algerian team insured their fruitful
future by their highly technical young aged players.Mozambique
team performance reached its utmost in the third set when Sifa
Quitende led her team to reach to the set point 24-23, but
finally it was the experience which finalized the situation
towards the Algerian side.
Kenya which was ranked second in the last African Nations
Championship in their homelands last August found it easy to
sweep South Africa in straight sets 25-19, 25-13, 25-13 due to
the good spikes of the experienced star Dorcas Ndasaba and the
perfect digging by the libero Mercy Wesutila. The South African
team did their best in the first set to stop the strong Kenyan
hits through their stars Rifkah Ismail and Palesa Sekhonyama but
they failed afterwards, to pave the way for Kenya to win the
second and third sets easier.
Nigeria women team showed high performance in their first match
in the competition against Ghana to have a straight set victory
25-20, 25-19, 25-18 in presence of the full capacity of the
competition hall. Nigeria led the match with their young renewed
team who had the final word by the net specially the spiker
Dorothy Egum and the blocker Ladi Jalmet.
