in the second day to lead the teams by four
points. Egypt team regained performance
after losing in the first day to defeat
Nigeria in straight sets 3/0
(26/24-25/17-26/24) to proceed to the second
place, leaving the Nigerian team in the last
position.
For the second
day the competition was attended by the
first nigerian lady Mrs. Stella Obasanjo,
the wife of the Nigerian president, who is
the hounrary President of Gala.
In the first
match it was pure African competition
between Egypt and Nigeria where the
Egyptians tried to remove the negative
picture in the opening day, when they lost
easily to Russia and the Nigerians tried to
get a win in presence of their spectators.
The host team started agressively in the
first set due to the good performance of the
spiker Eni Chike and leaded several times
till the set point 24/22 when the Egyptians
leaded by the the most experienced player
Hamdy El-Safi took three successive points
to win the most exciting set 26/24.
In the second
set Nigerian players were depressed paving
the way for the Egyptians
to win easier 25/17 due the perfect block of
Ibrahim Rashwan and El-Safi.
The third set
was similar to the first as the Nigerians
used their good block by both Eleri and
Udougu to prevent the spikes of the tall
Egyptian players till leading 16/14, then
Egypt regained performance by the yong
spiker Islam Awad to lead 22/20. Nigeria
then leaded 24/23 and reached the set point
for the second time, but again they lost
26/24 after the perfect service of the best
player in the match Hamdy El-Safi.
In the second
match it was European competition between
Russia and Portugal. The first set was the
most exciting as both teams played a modern
volleyball but the taller Russian players
succeeded to end the set 30/28 in more than
half an hour after a great performance of
their perfect spiker Berezhko and the
blocker Abrossimov.
The second set
was also an opposition beween the perfect
Portuguese spikers aided by the perfect
setter Pinhiero and the solid Russian
Blockers leaded by Piatak and again the
Russian were the winners 25/22. The third
set was the shortest and easiest for the
perfect attack of Russia team to win 25/16.
The final day
of the Gala will show 2 matches as Nigeria
plays Russia and Egypt meets Portugal.
In the press
conference Egyptian coach Abdel-Hamid
El-Wassimy stated that his team will be
ready after this competition for the African
Nations' Championship in Cairo next August
