AFRICAN GALA CHAMPIONSHIP-THIRD AND LAST
DAY
RUSSIA WON THE CUP, PORTUGAL DEFEATED EGYPT
Russia won the first ever
African Gala Championship in the city of
Abuja- Nigeria , winning the
third match in row against Nigeria 3/1
(23/25-25/20-25/19-25/21) in the third and
final day of the competition. Portugal
defeated Egypt 3/0 (27/25-25/19-25/23) to
occupy the second place leaving the African
teams Egypt and Nigeria third and fourth
respectively.
The first match was very exciting as the
Nigerian team played a magnificent first set
and started by a high performance to win
25/23 with Adamu Jonah as a superstar with
his perfect spikes. Russians regain the
rhythm in the second set and arrange their
solid block to win 25/20 due to blocker
Abrassimov. The third set was the same, but
with more concentrated spikes from Kalinine
and Achtchev of the Russian side. Nigeria
tried to prolong the match to a tie break by
the increased activity of Eni Chike Eleri
Denis by the net, but the high performance
of the Russian ended the fourth set 25/21.
In the second match the Egyptian team
appeared in a poor performance that they
didn't lead in points all
through the match except once in the third
set. The weak block as well as the lack of
proper defence in the back area of Egyptian
team gave the Portuguese the lead from the
start 8/2 and 16/14 in the two technical
time out, but Egypt came near to equalize
23/23 but Portugal ended the set 27/25 in 26
min, due to the perfect spikes of Gaspar
Hugo and Luis Costa. In the second set the
Egyptian defence was more lax paving the way
for Portugal team to won 25/19 easily. In
the third set Egypt leaded for the first and
last time 8/6 untill Portugal team regain
the activity in the net to win finally
25/23.
In the closing ceremony Nigeria Volleyball
Federation President Engr. H.A. Gomel
expressed his gratitude and appreciation to
Dr. Ruben Acosta, FIVB President and Dr. Amr
Elwani CAVB President who were the moving
forces behind the hosting of the competition
between the African and European teams after
six years of the first attempt to host the
Gala in 1997
