Kenya Intensifies Training for Women's African Cup of Nations in Abuja
Two times Olympians Kenya women national volleyball team ended their preparation for the African Cup of Nations which throws off in Abuja, Nigeria from September 5. Kenya comes as one of the most favorites for the trophy with both Egypt the defending champions and Nigeria with their new promising team. Algeria with their newly formed team will be also great competitors.
Kenya will be going to Abuja with the sole aim of dethroning defending champions Egypt though they are aware that Algeria is going to present stiff challenge.
Speaking at the team's training camp where both local and international journalists have been covering the training on daily basis, head coach David Lung'aho who is being assisted by Mulinge and Paul Bitok said the players were in high spirits and responding well to training.
Among the experienced players in the team are acting team captain Dorcas Ndasaba, assistant captain Lucy Chege, libero player Mercy Wesutila, Emilly Chemutai, Janet Wanja, Catherine Wanjiru, Asha Makuto and Judith Serenge.
"Apart from going to Abuja with the aim of wrestling the title from Egypt, we intend to use the African Cup of Nations as part of our preparations for next year's World Championships in Japan," said Lung'aho.
Kenya Volleyball Federation secretary general Jacob Owiti who has been visiting the team in training everyday accompanied by deputy secretary general Maina Chelogoi and KVF Press Officer Jack Kwemba said he was happy with the preparations and expressed confidence that Kenya will do well in Abuja.
The Kenyan ladies who have participated in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games lost the title to Egypt in Nairobi and with the experienced players in the team they will be among the favorites in Abuja.
