Second victory for Algeria,
Kenya and Cameroon clubs
Niamey,
Niger April 22, 2007-: Three favorite teams Mouloudia of
Algeria, GSU of Kenya and FAP of Cameroon clinched their second
victory in a raw in the second day of the twenty sixth Men’s
Volleyball African Clubs Champions Championship here at Palais
des Sports hall in Niamey, Niger on Sunday and became near
quarterfinal vacancies. The defending champions Al Ahly were in
a rest day after the disqualification of Bulldogs of Zimbabwe.
Al Ahly of Libya, University of Rwanda and Inter club of Congo
Brazzaville set their first win in the competition to regain the
hope of quarterfinal tickets.
The competition second day was attended by the Control Committee
President Mr. Baba Sy, SOC delegates Mr. Okba Gougam and Mr.
Morakinyo, Referee Delegate Mr. Majeed Djirad, CAVB Technical
Director Mrs. Howyda Mondy and Niger Volleyball Federation
President Mr. Amada Sidiyane.
Al
Ahly of Libya played good match one day after they had arrived
to Niamey and pulled of a straight sets victory over the
organizers ASVB of Niger 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-20) in Pool A.
The Libyan team was superior in the net action and succeeded to
stop the strong Niger spikes of their best attacker Amadou
Alichina. Ahly of Libya became 1-0 in win- loss ratio, while
ASVB dropped to 0-2 and lost the chance of quarterfinal ticket.
GSU of Kenya returned from fatigue and played a good match to
defeat Port Douala of Cameroon 3-1 in an exciting match that
show different volleyball skills in Pool D. The Kenyan team used
their strong backline led by the libero Jermiah Rotish and the
spikes of Wakoli Tali to bring the victory which raised their
win- loss record to 2-0. Port of Cameroon dropped to 1-1.
“I’m happy to see my team playing with this performance after
they recovered from their fatigue.” Said GSU head coach Moses
Epoloto. “I think our pool is very tough but we cut a long way
towards qualification to the quarterfinal. I think Wakoli Tali
was our star today with our libero Rotish.” He added.
FAP
of Cameroon played another Marathon of five set match and came
from two sets behind to clinch a thriller victory over the
struggling Defense Sport of Ethiopia 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 29-27,
25-17, 15-7) in 93 minutes of exciting volleyball in the
competition Pool C. FAP started the match as the first day as
they committed many mistakes in reception and digging which was
used by the efficient Ethiopian players Jemesjen and Mekoun
Habtamb to win the first two sets. FAP players regained their
rhythm in defense and attacks and used their big gun main Fossi
and Robert Samou to clinch three successive sets and win the
critical match which secured a quarterfinal vacancy.
The Cameroon coach Miam Blaise was happy to win two matches in
the tie break which mean that the team keep the pace and spirit
till the last moment.
Mouloudia of Algeria defeated Tiko of Madagascar in straight
sets 27-25, 25-21, 25-15. The Algerian team used the fast
combinations by the net using the dominance of their centers and
achieved their second victory in Pool C raising their record to
2-0, while Tiko dropped to 0-2.
The Algerian team showed their strength for the second time and
proved their consistency before the important matches in the
second round after they secured their ticket to the
quarterfinals.
University
of Rwanda used their big guns Eric Nsabimana and Lawrence Yakan
and the competition tallest player Jean Uwamahoro to clinch a
difficult victory over University Calavi of Benin 3-1 (25-13,
28-30, 25-19, 25-21) in Pool B. It was the first victory for
Rwandan team to raise their win loss ratio to 1-1 while Benin
dropped to 0-1 in their competition first match after the
disqualification of Bulldogs of Zimbabwe from the pool. The
Rwandan team started the match in their top form but thereafter
they thought it is easy to go for a straight sets victory but
Benin team came to the match and won the longest set in the
competition till now due to the strong spikes of Tabe Lafia.
Rwanda regained the rhythm and won the third and fourth sets to
win the critical match which secured a place in the second
round.
“We started very well in the second set but our performance
decreased when the players thought that it is easy to bring the
victory and that made our duty much harder.” Said the Rwandan
coach Emmanuel Ndongutse after the match. He added that he is
satisfied with the performance and result that put the team in a
good place to qualify and his star in the match was the strong
spiker Eric Nsabimana.
Benin head coach Ali Yaro said that his opponent stored their
energy in the match against the defending champions Ahly and so
they appeared in a better performance against us. He added that
he is happy with the motivation of his players to come back to
the match after the first set.
Inter Club of Congo Brazzaville continued their superior
performance, but this time they achieved 3-0 victory over Mugher
Cement of Ethiopia (28-26, 25-20, 25-21) in 70 minutes in
competition Pool B. after losing to Port Douala team of Cameroon
in the first day in a fantastic five set match, Congo found no
way other than a victory in their second match and this is what
achieved by the their exciting performance and with the high
performance of their stars Love Houassazo, Mopoto and Dovniama.
Inter raised their win- loss ratio to 1-1 while Cement became
0-2.
