Egypt achieved the first African victory, Brazil stopped USA

Casablanca, Morocco, July 9, 2007 – Egypt Volleyball Junior team clinched the first African victory at the fourteenth Men’s Junior World Championship here at Casablanca and Rabat, Morocco in the third day of the preliminary round. The highly performed Egyptian players swept Argentina 3-1 in their pool B match. The host team Morocco suffered their third defeat against Italy in straight sets.

In Pool B, Egypt got it right this time and played an excellent game to score an upset victory 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 24-26, 23-25) over Argentina and World Champion Russia beat Slovenia 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22).

Other results on Monday saw Bulgaria beat Japan 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 15-12) and Italy beat hosts Morocco 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-13) in Pool A. Morocco got the third successive defeat and is at the bottom of Pool A.

Brazil proved their favoritism after they stopped USA 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19) in a match played in Rabat in Pool B on Monday. Brazil's big guns Wallace De Souza and Tiago Barth put on an exhilarating attacking display to penetrate the solid American block as Brazil wrapped up the match in 1h40. The South American champions were quick to gain an upper hand in the game, taking an early lead which brought them to set-point at 24-18. However, the USA, which had upset the defending champions Russia the previous evening, was not giving up without a fight. American William Price was the best scorer of the match with 21 points.

In Pool A in Casablanca, Cuba won their first match in the Junior World Championship against Iran with a dynamic 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13). Because of the injury of spiker Yadier Sanchez, Cuba began with their new trio Raydel Delgado, Leonar Moreno and Ismael Fernandez to make a good work by the net blocking and spiking.

With a 2-1 record, Brazil, Russia and USA are fighting for the first and second position in Pool B, while in Pool A Iran, Japan, Italy and Bulgaria are also with a 2-1 record and still on the run for the next round.

Tuesday's matches see Japan take on Iran, Bulgaria play Italy and Morocco up against Cuba in Pool A and Brazil playing Egypt, Russia against Argentina and USA against Slovenia in Pool B.

The first round composed by two pools of six teams each, which is being played in a Round Robin system to determine the ranking. The teams will be classified from 1-6. The teams ranked first and second advance to Semi Finals. The Semi Finals and play offs rounds consists of a total of 6 matches: two Semi Final matches for the rankings 1 – 4, two matches for the classification 5 – 8 and two matches for the classification 9 – 12. The Finals and play offs consists of a total of 6 matches: the winners of the Semi Finals will play the final, 1st – 2nd position. The losers of the Semi Finals will play for the 3rd and 4th rank position. The winners of the play off or the 5th – 6th position and the losers of the play off 5 -8 will play for the 7th – 8th position. The same will be applied for the position from 9 to 12.

The final will be played on Sunday July 15th in Casablanca.
