2009 CAVB Sports Organizing Commission and Beach volleyball meeting

Proposals of the African League and the new formula of African competitions

Cairo, Egypt, December 18, 2009- The African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Sports Organizing committee put many fruitful proposals in front of the CAVB executive committee to start a new era of the African championships starting from 2010 according to the decisions that had been adopted during the 2009 CAVB Congress in Algeria last September.

One of the most important items discussed in the meeting was putting the new formula of the qualification for the African Nations Championship at the senior, junior or youth level that aims mainly at increasing the number of participating teams through the zonal and regional tournaments.

The committee decided to divide the 53 countries into 8 sectors according to the geographical location to decrease the cost of traveling where the champion of each sector qualify to the finals of the competition except sector I than includes 10 countries which qualify the champions and the vice- champions to the finals. With the 9 qualified teams, the finals will include the organizers of the finals, the defending champions and the top African ranked teams in the later FIVB ranking to constitute 16 teams in the final. Here is the constitution of the sectors

South Sector I (10 countries): Zambia- Malawi- Zimbabwe- Mozambique- Lesotho- Botswana- Swaziland- Namibia- Madagascar- South Africa

East Sector II (8 counties): Comoros- Seychelles- Rwanda- Burundi- Uganda- Tanzania- Mauritius- Kenya.

West Sector III (6 countries): Togo- Benin- Ghana- Burkina Faso- Cote d’Ivoire- Nigeria

North Sector IV (6 counties): Libya- Sudan- Chad- Mali- Niger- Tunisia

Far East Sector V (6 countries): Liberia- Sierra Leone- Guinea Conakry- Guinea Bissau- Gambia- Cameroon

Far North Sector VI (5 counties): Mauritania- Senegal- Cape Verde- Morocco- Algeria

Far East Sector VII (5 countries): Somalia- Ethiopia- Djibouti- Eritrea- Egypt

Central Sector VIII (7 countries): Center Africa- RD Congo- Congo- Gabon- Equatorial Guinea- Sao Tome- Angola.

The meeting will also discussed the new system proposed by the CAVB President Dr. Amr Elwani to establish the African League for the African National teams in a home and away system. The competition comprises 8 National teams 6 of them will be selected according to the FIVB ranking and 2 wild cards decided by CAVB.

In the continental round of this competition the 8 teams will be divided into 2 pools of 4 playing in a double round robin format in a home and away basis. Two matches will be played each weekend. The top two teams in each pool qualify to the final round which will be organized by one of the qualified teams.

The meeting presented also the new competition under the name Baba Sy who is one of the African volleyball Legends still doing a lot for the continental and World volleyball. The competition will be mainly a preparation for the National teams that qualify to the FIVB competition.

On the beach volleyball side the meeting discussed the implementation of the beach volleyball agenda starting from June 2010 as well as the qualification system to the 2012 London Olympic Games through a presentation done by Gershon Rorich.
