Thrills at Safaricom Beach Volleyball Tournament


Nairobi, Kenya, Tuesday,May 5, 2009- The Safaricom Beach Volleyball Tournament ended in Mombasa over the weekend with Stima “A” team emerging the winners in the men’s category after beating Jacaranda Dhow Bar Ukunda 2-0 (21-17, 21-17) sets in the finals.

The winners who played a well coordinated game throughout the sets were represented by James Ontere and Domnic Kemboi while the Runners-up were represented by Mannase Chetambi and Lucas Ondenge both who played their hearts out but failed to contain their well drilled opponents.

In the women category, Dorcas Ndasaba and Margaret Indakala led APK Nairobi to a 2-0 (21-14, 21-9) sets victory over the hard fighting Bandari “3” who were represented by Eunice Maiyo and Anne Okello in the thrilling duel which could have gone either way.

In the Mixed Doubles, F&J comprising Fauzia Tairara and James Ontere emerged the winners after beating Jacaranda Coconut 2-1 (19-21, 21-16, 15-6) in a mouth watering encounter which kept the fans on their feet throughout. The losers were represented by John Ndungu and Marion Makhapila.

In the Novices category NYS “A” led by Alouse Kinywa and Raphael Mwangi put up a spirited fight to beat NYA “A” comprising Nicholas K and David K 2-0 (21-8, 21-13) sets.

The Safaricom Beach Volleyball Tournament was very successful attracting 25 teams in total from all over the country. The occasions was graced by the Coast Provincial Director of Sports Jack Indankwa, Collins from Safaricom the main sponsors, madam Rosyline Muthoni from DHL, Mwangi Hawaii Group of Companies and Gabriel General Manager of Pirates Beach hotel as the host.

Safaricom promised to make the tournament an annual event and all the other guests promised to emulate Safaricom by coming on board to support Kenya Beach Volleyball Council in organizing more such tournaments in the country.

Apart from the thrilling matches, there was a lot of fun and entertainment from traditional dancers during the two days. Comedians also moved the big crowds with laughter and fun.

During the tournament the winners pocketed KES 10,000 Runners up KES 5,000 in the main categories. In Mixed Doubles categories the winners pocketed KES 3,000 while Runners-up went home with Shs 2,000.

Other Awards, Most Impressive Player MEN- Bera Evans (Posta), WOMEN- Dorcas Ndasaba (APK Nairobi), Most Promising Team- APTC (Men) Bandari ‘3’ (WOMEN), Best Spiker - John Ndung’u and Caroline Okello, Best Server- Samson Otieno and Esther Lameck, Best Blocker- Timothy Emojoong and Margaret Indakala, Best Receiver- Francis Nguma and Fauzia Tairara.
