Safaricom Beach Volleyball Open tournament set for Mombasa

Nairobi, Kenya, Wednesday, April 15, 2009: Beach volleyball season in Kenya is set to throw off in the coastal city of Mombasa on April 18-19 with Safaricom Beach Volleyball Open Tournament at Pirates Beach in Mombasa.

The season opener which will be part of the national Beach Volleyball Circuit in the region will be sponsored by Safaricom which is a leading mobile phone provider in East Africa.

According to Kenya Beach Volleyball Council Secretary Sammy Mulinge, invitations have been sent out to volleyball clubs, colleges and schools to grace the tournament whose preparations are at an advanced stage.

“This being our first tournament in this year’s beach volleyball calendar, we expect a bumper entry and we are appealing to clubs and teams which have received invitation letters to ensure that they confirm their participation in good time,” said Mulinge.

“I wish to say here that as a council we are very grateful to our sponsor Safaricom and Home Boyz since their support will go along way in making the event a great success,” said Mulinge.

He pointed out that the tournament will be divided into four different categories featuring Senior Men and Women, juniors, mixed couples and tourists’ category.

“Beach volleyball being a popular sport we would like to use our tournaments to develop it by involving different categories. The fact that the Safaricom sponsored event will be staged at the coastal city which is frequented by tourists we would like to involve them so as to help market Kenya and the sport,” Mulinge said.

Among the teams expected to parade for the 2009 beach volleyball calendar season opener are Administration Police, Kenya Commercial Bank, Kenya Pipeline, General Service Unit and Kenya Prisons Service amongst others. Schools and colleges from the coach will also be in action. The Secretary pointed out that winners in the main categories will pocket Kshs 10, 000 (US$ 126) runners-up Kshs 5,000 (US$63) and medals among other prizes.

“Pairing and registration of players for this tournament will be done on the same day as such we request early confirmation of participation in order to make our programmes for the two days to run smoothly,” said Mulinge adding that the Safaricom Beach Volleyball Open Tournament will be used to select players to represent the country in the international tournament to be held in Kenya on June 13-14.
