8 slots for Africa in the 2009
age category FIVB World Championships
Cairo,
Egypt, January 19, 2009- Africa will participate with a record
of 8 slots in this year’s FIVB age category World championship
following the final decision which was taken before to give
Africa two slots in the Men’s Junior World Championship, one
slot in the Women’s Junior World Championship, three in the
Boys’ Youth World Championship and two in the Girls Youth World
Championship.
This will be a new record of the African presentation in these
prestigious FIVB events that are held biannually.
The Men’s Junior World Championship that will be held in India
31 July to 9 August 2009 will show the African champions Tunisia
along with the runner up Egypt in the final. This will be the
fourth time in a raw for Egypt to qualify to this competition,
while the third for Tunisia in the last 4 competitions.
The African champions Egypt will represent t the continent in
the 2009 Women’s Junior World championship in Mexico 16 to 25
July. Egypt represented Africa in the last three competitions.
The 2009 Boys’ youth World Championship will feature the maximum
of three teams from Africa which will be the continental
champions Tunisia along with the runner up Egypt as well as the
third Algeria. Egypt and Tunisia represented the continent in
the last edition of this competition which showed the best ever
African performance in FIVB competition when they came fourth in
2001.
The 2009 Girls’ youth World Championship will show the African
champions Tunisia as well as the runner up Egypt. Tunisia was
the last African representative in 2007.
“We are happy to have this number of African teams in the World
Championships which will help our progress through the big
clashes against the best teams all over the world,” said CAVB
president Dr. Amr Elwani who did great efforts with the World
volleyball governing body to win this record of vacancies. “All
African teams should work hard to proof their consistency at the
world championships because these young players in both
categories can gain a lot experience from these participations.”
