Nigeria Olympic
Committee President Habu Ahmed Gumel named new FIVB
Executive Vice-President
The FIVB Executive Committee has
nominated Mr. Habu Ahmed Gumel as Executive
Vice-President to replace the outgoing Mr. Yuri
Chesnokov
Nigeria Olympic Committee and Nigeria Volleyball
Federation President Gumel, a 58-year engineer from
Jigawa State, studied in Kiev, Russia, before beginning
a career in engineering and a successful alternate
career in sport organization. Already a member of the
FIVB Board of Administration, he was chosen as FIVB
Executive Vice-President during the annual FIVB Board
earlier this month.
Gumel’s appointment came after the Board showed their
appreciation for Chesnokov, who attended his first FIVB
Board in 1975. “The longest applause I’ve ever heard in
the Board of Administration,” said FIVB President Dr.
Rubén Acosta after the tribute to Chesnokov.
Chesnokov was first elected FIVB Vice-President in 1976.
He has been President of the Rules of the Game
Commission, Sports Organizing Committee and Coaching
Commission in his time with the FIVB.
The Russian played Volleyball from 1954 to 1966 with the
CSKA team and the USSR Men's team, winning gold medals
at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 and the 1960 and
1962 World Championships.
