Kenya to host ECAVCO
Club Championships
Nairobi,
Kenya March 21, 2008: Barely a month after the African
Women Volleyball Club Championships was switched from
Kenya to Egypt, the regional club volleyball
championships will be staged in Nairobi from May 28-June
1.
According to East and Central Africa Volleyball
Confederation (ECAVCO) Secretary General Jacob Owiti,
Kenya has once again been given the honour to host the
regional club championships after hosting the same event
last year.
“We have had a meeting and consulted widely and member
countries have unanimously agreed that this year’s
regional club championships should be staged in
Nairobi,” said Owiti who is also a member of CAVB Sports
Commission.
Owiti who was speaking during a press conference
attended by ECAVCO Treasurer Kenneth Tonui said each
member country will be required to send four teams
comprising two women teams and two men teams for the
tournament slated for Moi International Sports Centre in
Kasarani.
He revealed that invitations have been sent to
Presidents of ECAVCO member federations which include
Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC Congo and hosts
Kenya.
“According to the tentative program, we expect the teams
to arrive in Nairobi on May 28 when the Technical
Meeting will be held at Sports View Hotel paving way for
the competition to start on May 29 through to June 1,”
said Owiti.
He said the regional tournament is slowly becoming
popular since member federations use it for talent
search which helps them boost their national teams for
CAVB and FIVB competitions.
He appealed to sponsors and well wishers to come forward
and support the ECAVCO event since it will go along way
in helping identify and nurture volleyball talent in the
region.
“Since time is not on our side, we are appealing to
member federations to confirm their participation with
ECAVCO secretariat by April 30 to enable us work on
logistics which will make the tournament a great
success,” Owiti said.
