Egypt, March 7, 2008- The Egyptian President of the
Republic Mr. Hosni Mubarak has awarded the African
Volleyball Confederation CAVB and Egyptian volleyball
Federation President Dr. Amr Elwani by the first degree
Order of the country after volleyball was chosen as the
best sport in the country for the second year in a raw.
President Mubarak remitted the Order to Elwani after the
great achievements done by the Men’s National team ended
by the historic qualification to the 2008 Beijing
Olympic and congratulated him for his great work to
upgrade the sport all over the country and to increase
volleyball popularity. He asked him to continue his hard
work at both local and international levels as great
symbol of sport in Egypt and at the international level
as a president of CAVB and vice president of FIVB. He
asked the players to be good representatives for their
countries at the most important sports event on the
earth, the Olympic Games.
Mubarak remitted the order also to the Men’s Volleyball
players who represented the country in the international
competitions in 2007/2008 season.
Egypt volleyball achieved many victories in 2007
including the Gold Medal of the 2007 All Africa games in
Blida, Algeria for the second time in a raw, the gold
medal of the 2007 African Nations Championship in
Durban, South Africa and the first position in the 2008
African Olympic Qualification in Durban, South Africa.
Egypt men’s team also won three matches in the 2007
World Cup in Japan which is the best ever for an African
team in a big FIVB competition.
All the big daily newspapers published the news in their
main pages and reported about what volleyball did for
the country in the last three years at all levels
including the gold medal of the 2005 Mediterranean Games
in Spain when Egypt had become the first ever African
team to win an international competition.
Elwani was very happy to get the highest level sports
prize and told the journalists who followed up the
ceremony that he will continue his hard work to gain
more achievements for Africa through his position as
CAVB president with the help of the International
Volleyball Federation (FIVB) led by the president Dr.
Ruben Acosta. “To get this order from the Egyptian
president is a great honor to volleyball and to me and
this gives me a big energy to continue working in the
same spirit for our beloved sport.” Elwani said.
